The Garrison Band played a splendid programme of music on the Esplanade ycsterdiy afternoon. There was a large attendance, and the sum of £5 was collected in aid of the band's funds. The improved weather was no doubt responsible for the number of cyclists on the roads yesterday. A party arrived in town from Stratford, whilst a local party visited Urenui. They report the roads in very fair order. It really seemed on Saturday that the bad weather had left its, but the relief was only temporary. Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday were beautifully line. Then eainc the rain and hail again. The afternoon gave promise of better tilings, but last night the relentless rains came on again.

On Saturday morning, as the Takapuu i w..s heading lor the wharf at Aloturoa, her eng.nes having stopped, a heavy sea caused her to swerve, iter altered course was direct for the end of the wharf. the engines were sent "full speed astern," but there was iusuihcient time to retard tne vessel, which was carried forward by tne heavy swell, and the steamer struck the wharl, breaking several stringers, and causing damage to the extent of £IOO. The steamer sustained no damage. Air Brown had just had a telephone put in connecting his oilice a.id house, and was very much pleased with it. "1
tell you, Smith," he was saying, "this telephone business is a wonderful thing. I want you to dine with me this evening, and 1 will notify Mrs Brown to expect you." Speaking through the telephone—"My friend Smith will dine with us this evening." Then to his friend—"Now listen and hear how plain her reply comes back." Mrs Brown's reply came back with startling distinctness "Ask your friend Smith if he thinks we keep a hotel." The anti-clerical agitation in Rome shows no signs of abatement. The Kome correspondent of the Tablet, in a long article describing the present condition of things in the Imperial city, says:—• "Here in Koine two cardinals have been insulted by the rubble in the streets, a rullian has spat in the face of the Maestro Perosi, many priests have found it necessary to apply for permission to arm themselves against possible and probable attacks, the lives of priests and nuns arc hardly safe in the public streets, and their reputations are in the hands of the press, the most unscrupulous in the world. This is the situation in Kome on the anniversary of the election of Pius X."
A sensational incident took place at the Queensland National Bank premises, Brisbane, a few weeks ago. The nightwatchiu.m, who was in the main banking room, heard a noise, and on going into tlie lavatory and opening the door, he found a man standing on the windowledge, pressing closely against the glass, as though trying to escape observation.
The watchman, who had a live-chamber-ed revolver in his hand, told the man to cume down into the light, and stated that he half turned to enter the room, when the intruder jumped down from the ledge, and, catching him by the arms, pinioned tliem behind his back. A struggle ensued, and the watchman, fearing that the man might have a companion outside, used his revolver. The bullet entered the man's right temple, he fell to the floor without a word, and
died a few hours afterwards. He was identilied as Oswald Brawn, the son of respectable people at Maryborough. He was about 18 years of age, and had been in Brisbane only about two or three weeks.
A wonderful improvement in color photography is announced. The wellknown linn, Messrs Luniicre, of Lyons, have placed on the market a dry plate which, exposed much as any other plate is exposed in the camera—only through a specially prepared yellow screen —gives
within half an hour of exposure a finished and dry positive transparency on glass in all the colors of nature, as true, according lo experts who have already experimented with the process, as the best three-color work produced hitherto under infinitely more exacting conditions. The charm of the new process is its comparative cheapness and simplicity which will place it within the reach of even the average amateur. It has apparently but one drawback, namely, that, so Tar, no means has been devised by which the result may be transferred to paper. It may be assumed, however, that a firm who'have achieved so much will not be content until they have ma.de the process as perfect as inventive genius and modem science can make it. Messrs W. W.
