Mr. (J. K JJuv.-sctfc, Clifton county oilgincer, is sulTering from the prevailing nriluenza epidemic. Mr. V,\ Foremnn, chairman of the Cliiton County Council, is at present recovering from an attack of bronchitis and sciatica, following upon influenza. Air. F. Sal way, on retiring from the directorate of the Bell Block Co-opera-tive Butter Factory, was presented by the shareholders with a marble clock Mtitably engraved. Mr. J. S. Connett made the presentation. ' Air. K. Clayton, recently of the Palm- 1 c-rslon railway stall', died at Normanby on Wednesday of appendicitis. Rather a. sad feature in connection with liis death was that his intended wife (a Ralmerston lady) was sent for to see Air Clayton, and proceeded to Normanby by the first train, only to find that the young fellow had died several hours before.

Interviewed by the Kaikoura Star, the Rev. W. McAra, who has lieen nomin-1 ated by the Taranaki Presbytery for the position of Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Churches of the Dominion for 1008, said that he will dec-line to be. nominated for this high distinction, his reason being that he is too far distant from the, centre, and could not do justce to the office from an isolated place like Kaikoura.
