CRICKET UMPIRES.
To the Editor. Sir, —I see the names of four individuals announced as being appointed umpires by the New Plymouth Cricket Club, in your issue of Wednesday. I would like to know if these umpires are thoroughly conversant with the rules of cricket Sly opinion is that umpires should pass some kind of an examination similar to that of football referees. Some of the decisions given last season were simply outrageous. I would suggest a committee of five well-known cricketers to form a Board of Examiners, and the following names would form a competent Board:—Messrs. Ogle. ScholefieM, Haskell, Whittle, Frank Robertson, and Xieholls (Inglewoorl). Such a Board of Examiners would give confidence in the appointment of umpires, and the frequent complaints of wrong decisions would no longer be heard in the land.—l am, etc., J.K.L.
