The Australian Jockey Club's Derby 'takes [ilace to-morrow, and we will see whether the respective owners identified with the two New Zealand-bred volts Maranui and Seddon had good grounds for making an assault on Randwick this spring (says the Auckland Herald's sporting writer.) Maranui's disappointing display in the Kawson Stakes caused him to lose caste in many cpiarters; but the calm heads were found counselling patience regarding the summing up of the bay son of Malatna and Gralin. Maranui has been responsible for some taking work since he struck his cobrs in the initial bout under silk, and both of those good I judges, "Milroy" and Mnrtindale," hold him in respect for next Saturday's race. Further than that he has been sent | across to Randwirk to fulfil his engagements nothing has been heard of Seddon. The owner of Hie Soult colt having determined to throw down the gauntlet against a strong field at Rand- , wick in preference to attacking the (iuincas, it would seem safe to assume that the astute Isaac Foulsham, who is putting Wairiki's full ■ In-other through his facings, holds something in the shape of exalted views regarding the probability of the Auckland bred io!t succeeding in first-class company. li.v all accounts Soddon came on very rapidly when he made a real start on the upgrade, and unless some good judges are woefully mistaken he will render a good account of himself at three years old. As was only to lie expected'the decisive victory gained by Mountain King in the settlement of the Rawson Stakes has caused the son of Wallace and Ronnie Rosette to come into pronounced favor for the blue riband. That there was a fine dash of brilliancy about Mountain King's initial offort at three years old is a point upon which there is a consensus of opinion; I but a doubt is entertained as to whether he will quite stay out the Derby course in sufficiently good style as to enable him to win.
"Milvoy." of the Sydney Mail, refer? In Mountain King thus:—''The son of Wallace won the affections of every horschn'er on the course for his fine racinsr. shape, and seven-league stride when he silenred the crowd that opposed him in the Rawson Stakes. He's a verv big chestnut colt, with a little while about him, and, like his Wood relations. Majestic. Bonnie Oriel, Scottish ! Kin", and 'Kinglike, he has- a great length of shoulder. There is no question about his being a galloping machine, hut there is just a doubt about his ability to stav a mile and a half, and as to' whether he is not a trille 'musical.' Rome of the sharp-eared watchers declare lie makes a noise at the end of a ",illop, hut T have never heen close in him at a finish, and so cannot spcak froin personal observation. Mountain Kin" is one of the finest striders I have seen" since Alicrcom anil The Australian Peer; in fact, he is very like the former in character and color, hut he lacks Ahereorn's depth of girth and hack rili."
