SIRES OF THE SEASON. ARMADALE STUD, OKAIAWA, TARANAKI. N.Z. TO STAND THIS SEASON, The Champion Clydesdale Stallion, LORD Eil:i!lim. ERSKINE is a very superior well-bred bay horse of the very best quality, and true type of the Clydesdale breed, standing 1G hands 3'/o inches high, lie is a very massive horse, with clean Hat bones, strong, well-formed joints, beautiful long silky liaiv, and grandlyformed round feet of good quality, with line broad hoof heads. He lias a beautiful head, and eyes characteristic ot courage and endurance, a good neck and crest, well-sprung ribs, remarkably good loins and strong short-coupled back. His action, both at the walk and trot, is all chat can be desired. Altogether ho is a most compactly-built, well-put-toge-thev specimen of a draught horse. Lord Erskine was bred by J. S. Holmes of Awamoa, Oama.ru, and is by the imported sire "Sandy Erskine," who is the sire of the well-known champion mare, "Lady Erskine"—owned by A. Alexander, Esq., Normanby, Taranaki—the dam of the champion two-year-old colt, Marcellus, recently purchased by VV. Taylor, Esq., Te Awamutu, at the record price of 750 guineas. Lord Erskine's Dam, Pearl 11., is by the famous sire, Crown Prince, grand Jain Sapphire, dam of Accountant, winner of numerous first prizes; tlii3 mare lias only been beaten Ijy her stable companion's great grjnd dam, Pearl, a mare specially selected by the late J. B. Blair, and imported on account of the late Hon. Matthew Holmes. From the foregoing it will be seen that Lord Erskine is descended from the vety best blood of good breeding Btrains, and he is certain to prove a getter of the best type of Clydesdales. His show ring successes prove him to be a horse of individual high-elass merit. In 1006 he gained the following awards: At Ashburton, first and champion; at the International Show, Christchurch, second prize and reserve champion, also first prize for best stallion in the walking competition (beating the champion stallion Pride of Newton), and first prize for Lord Rothschild's silver bowl for the best Colonial-bred stallion (Shire or Clydesdale) by an imported sire, thus gaining the highest number of awards at the Show. Lord Erskine was purchased in April, 1007, at a cost of 800 guineas by F. A. Bremer, of Okaiawa, Taranaki, from Mr Kobt. Clarke, Rosemeath Stud, Ashburton. VICTgRY is a brown horse, with a small .whir* star and black points, foaled in 1003, standing 15.2 and showing great quality and substauee. His cannon-bone measures 8y 2 in. He is a very stylish mover and possessed of a beautiful temper. His sire. Vanity Fair, represents the third generation of a brilliant line of sires, bred by Mr. Burdett Coutts. wherein the notorious high-stepping Norfolk blood of old Confidence has been hardened and improved in size, bone, and quality by successive crosses of Trifiit's Fireaway, the great Yorkshire sire. His dam, Vanity, is by Vigorous (1215 E.H.5.8.) out of Lonely (048 E.H.5.8.). Vigorous is als<s the grandsire of that celebrated hackney, Hedon Squire (14306), the property of Sir Walter Gilbey, Bart. This famous hackney, besides winning innumerable firsts, championships, gold medals, and challenge cups at the principal horse shows in Europe, scored such phenomenal success at the Paris International Horse Show in 1000, where, besides winning 3 gold medals, 7500 francs in prizes, and being first and champion of his class, he was awarded the Grand Championship for the best horse at the Show, all classes and breeds included. VICTORY is a sure foal-getter, over 00 per cent, of last season's marcs having proved in foal. Mares met at Eltliam and grazed free for one month. All care taken, but no responsibility. As a two-year-old he was first at Ilawkes Bay, first and champion at Egmont, and first at Taranaki. The horse his been shown seven times and never beaten.
