CANTERBURY SPRING MEETING. Per Pr.ss Association. Christehurch, List Night. Starina was scratched for all engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday. NOTES ON WANGANUI MEETING. (By "Moturoa.") A bowling gale of wind, with sharp, bleak -showers of rain, made tilings anything but pleasant for racegoers on the opening day. The course was fairly heavy, but large folds and good racing rewarded the big crowd who braved the

The state of the going settled the chanc*s of several warm favorites, but there were no sensational dividends. A fine field of thirteen saddled up for the opening event, the I'lving Handicap, Mr. .7. 11. McDonald's Gold Crest being installed favorite, with Flimsnap and Martvrium next in demand. Asteroid drew ] level at the distance, and a great rate ensued,, Sardonyx, handled in masterly fashion by A. McConnon, just snatching victory by a long head, Ivuroki and Asnayer close up. Lc lieau had a host of backers in the Hack Hurdles, but never pit clear of the ruck. UasMopea was ill front for seven furlongs, but (|uiekly faded out of tiie contest, leaving lluriinoana to score easily from Oryx, with the favorite third, slightly ill advance of Te lvanui. Relario anil Catapult dropped out of the I'utiki Hack Race. All lted, with Jenkins up, was reckoned a certainty, but went the way of most "morals." Dulciuea delayed the f-t::rI for sonic time, Irish Riile eventually getting the best of a fair send-oll". Clapping on great pace, the son of Musketry placed a big stretch of daylight between himself and the long strung eut Held, winning easily by a couple of lengths from the fast-linisiiing Flingat, with Svlvau Park, close up. next, and the rest a

little distance ba'.k, in a bunch. All lied was jammed on the rails running out'of the rtra : ght. and lost a lot of ground. Along the hack stretch lie made up ground, and was rushing over things with groat speed, when he stumbled at the home turn and nearly came down, therebv losing a sjood chance of whining. The Spring Handicap v.*as Hip concluding event. *the bark bring the subject ,/ brisk speculation. with Swimming Belt, Waitapu, Aeolus, and Rendrock fancied in that ord.-v. The Lark got

the best of a poor release, and made no race of it. romping home easily in front of Swimmi.ig Belt and Rendvoek. who came with a late run. Heavy ruin fell on the morning of

the second day's races, but cleared ofT about 10 o'clock, and the course quickly dried under a bright sun anil strong wind. Gold Crest was again a red-hot favorite, and of the others Flimsnap and St. Clainier carried most money in the Owen Handicap. Finery got the. best j of a good start, and led Flimsnap, Ga-

wain, and St. Clainier, with Gold Crets and Tarina whipping-in. Cold and St. Claimer caught the leaders

entering the straight, and the favorite won conitorlably by three parts of a length from the tup weight, St. Clainier, with (Jawain third and Flimnap dose up. All lied wild a very Jiofc order for the Moutoa Handicap, and, quickly assuming the lead, easily stalled oil the challenges of Signor and Sylvan Park, and rail in ail easy winner by lull a length. Signer just beat Sylvan Park for second money, Wairarupa was fourth, then dame 'White Star, Catapult, and Adventure last. All lied is a three-year-old bay colt by Stepuiak—-Madder, and his trainer, Mr. 1!. J. 11. l'rosser, reckons him a tinning champion. The Brunswick Hurdles saw Assayer, Aqua Regia, Sardonyx, and Le Beau most fancied, the distance, one and ahalf miles, just suited Assayer, who led most of the y ay in a longer race the first day. He led .from start to finish, and fairly "flew in."' Le Beau and Sardonyx rushed neck and neck for oeeond place, the latter landing the spoil by a bare head. Aqua Regia, General Kuroki, andXerida chased them home. Oryx and Sedgcmoor made the pace a '"cracker" in the Hack Hurdles, but rail themselves to a staivlstill after a mile had been covered, 'le Kanui and the favorite, Ilurimoana, wore first into the straight, but the weight told on the latter, and Te Kanui scored easily by several lengths. Oryx was third. Dulcinea fourth, and Seil'gemoor and Mauri tailing off. Sedgemoor was ridden by Charles Cochrane, and jumped well, but could not stay the distance. The Hack Hurdles were' run over in 2min olsee—a second faster than the Open Hurdles. _ The nine acceptors for the Wanganui Handicap all lined up at the barrier, the "tote" showing The Lark in great demand, St. Joe and Irish Rifle being fancied next. Irish Rifle streaked out from the tapes and led St. Joe past the stand. At Hie top turn there was little change in positions, but the field closed up a little going along the back stretch, the order being Irish ltifle, St. Joe, Bonrrasque, Waitapu, The Lark, in close order. Bonrrasque, who ran unkindly, threw up the sponge three furlongs from home, and The Lurk came lip "with a great run. When they straightened up for the run home Irish still in front, with Wait aim and The Lark closing up. Waitapu looked like winning, but Irish "Rifle gamete responded to Sid. Reid's vigoroil, calls and caught the judge's eve a half-length winner. The Lark just beat Downfall by a brad for third posi--1 ion. and the rest were strung out. Mr. T. 11. Cowry's Finland gelding lwbriknli' was nil od(ls-ou ''pick" for the Railway Handicap. Dusky Morn being v'l'ulrawn ill favor of his stablemale Koran, who had 141b- less _to hump along. Koran shot out with three ienglhs' lead from a bad start, but Bobrikott' qui'-Ulv made up leeway, and, ence in charge. n»ver left the issue in doubt. Koran. Flying Wind, and Tarina followed him home. The three leaders were in a line approaching the bottom bend, and Frisco and Swimming Belt showed the wav into the straight, and in a slashing finish tile former foiwd ahead and won a good race by a length and a-lialf. with The Stake third, Belario fourth, and Maniopoto. under a pull leading home the rest ill a bunch. C Jenkins. \Y. Trice, and Sid. Leid each rode two winners; F. Jones, R. Cameron. A. McConiion, Morns Vi. Young, Tritchard, George Price, and A. Ollivor piloted one apiece. Mr T.
