FATHER HAYS.

(To the Editer, Sir, —Some time since a paragraph wis going the rounds of the New Zealand press to the effect that Father Hays was dead. Many of us then thought there was some mistake, and I am glad to he able to report that, according to an English newspaper of August Ist,he is alive, well, and still active in the great temperance reform. Jt will be of interest to a great many to know that his work is prospering in the Old Country. The Executive of the Catholic Temperance Crusade held their annual meeting this year in Paris, and reported that 8000 persons had taken the temperance pledge from their organisation. Father Hays, who is president of the Crusade, gave his hearers great pleasure when he told them that he was not returning to AusIralia for the next two years. He said that he saw a great work to be done in England, and that: "A great crisis was coming, and the near future would see a battle between the forces of righteousness 011 the one hand and the vested interests of a tyrannical monopoly. 011 the other. It would be the trade versus the llesh and blood of tin; people. . . He was convinced that their most urgent need in every part of the country was another ten years of temperance teaching. 11l this way they would win tin intellect, and especially the rising generation, to their side, lie was pleased to report that the work of the Crusade had been taken up in many parts of Belgium." Father Hays was engaged for work ill Ireland for one mouth from 20th August, and then in England, until the end of November. J. write this because his numerous friends and supporters iu this Dominion will be glad to know that he is at this much loved work.—l am, etc., G.H.M.
