A SCHOOL TEACHER S HOUSE.

SMOKY, ROTTEN, AM) LEAKY. the average country settler can generally sec the necessity for decently housing bis butler factory employees, his pigs, and his horses, and himself. The law provides for inspection of shearers' quarters, and so lorth. Apparently the law is not one whit solicitous concerning the manner of housing the country teacher. Here is another addition to the long list of complaints on ihis score. The head teacher at Tariki, Mr U. Eason, resides in the old residence at Waipuku, and he describes its lituess as follows:—It will rccpiire considerable repairs to make it habitable for another winter. The brick chimney smokes, and leaks badly. After each heavy storm the fireplace is Hooded, the water running out into the room. The iron chimney that wc had put in the kitchen for the ralige is worn out, and requires renewing, the front door is too rotten to keep out the rain, with the result that the passage is Hooded every time the rain comes from the north. The windows also are far from being watertight. The roof leaks, necessitating the shifting of the Pjcds during stormy weather. The front room is badly infested with the borer, which has not only attacked the walls, but also the furniture, the more valuable of which we have had to remove in the hope that it lias escaped.'' Continuing, Mr. Eason apologises "for troubling you with regard to the defects of the residence!" Surely he ought to demand an apology from those who place him in such an apology for a house. For this rotten, smoky, leaky, wormeaten place he pays lis lid a week.
