Per Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Christchurch, Licensing Committee Btet this afternoon, when the position of Messrs. Manning and Co. in regard to the Criterion Hotel in Gloucestcr-str.-et Was dealt with. The committee at its previous meeting a week ago decided that neither the licensee nor his wife Was a fit person to conduct the house, tint a final decision in regard to the renewal was held over for a week to Consider the position of the "innocent parties," Messrs. Manning and Co., who hare a mortgage of £B6OO over the property. The chairman stated that the committee were of opinion they had power under section 76 of the Licensing Act to cancel the license, but as it had been notified that the previous licensee (Green) had ceased from that day to have any further interest in the house, the committee did not propose to take any further action, but would turn over the leaf as to what the committee o-n----aider was one of the most discreditable episodes that had occurred in connection With licensed houses in Christchurch. Counsel for the new licensee stated that all the female? employed by the last licensee had l»een discharged, and that for the future only two barmaids would be employed at any one time.
