ANGLO-RUSSIAN TREATY.
INTERESTS IN ASIA DEFINED. Received Sept. 25, 10.20 p.m. London, September 25. The Anglo-Russian convention has been confidentially conuiiunicated to the Powers.
It caused an excellent impression at Teheran, allaying the misgivings engendered by an alarmist press campaign, inasmuch at* it is purely and simply intended to regulate mutual interests in Central Asia on I lie basis of amity And goodwill. Britain's position in the Persia Gu.f is strengthened by the inclusion of Banderablias in the British sphere, and Afghanistan is maintained as a State. The Times says the engagements with Russia now entered into afford every security that treaties can give against any further advance of Russia towards India. Moreover, Tibet remains hermetically closed to both counrties, and in the event of complications, we will be able to discuss them with Russia on a solid basis of treaty engagements. Received Sept. 26, 1.10 a.m. London, Septcralier 25. North Persia down to Ispali.m ami Vewl is assigned to Russia fr eon cssion purposes. East Persia frem l!underwabbas to Arghm : stan is assigned t > Britain. Russia is expected to reeognise that Afghanistan is outside the sphere of Russian influence, ;ind will not appoint agents, and conducts all political relations with the Ameer through the British Government.
