THE MURWILLUMBAH FIRE.
BURNING AREA LOOTED BY HOOLIGANS. Sydney, September IS. The Lord Mayor of Sydney lias opened a furU for the relief of those who have suffered loss through the fire nt! Murwillunibah. The .Mayor of the town has received messages of condolence from all parts, including New Zealand. Many of the homeless people arc sheltering in tents supplied by the Co, lonial Sugar Company. Others are in the houses which escaped the fire. Goal order prevails. A sad feature of the lire is the large amount of looting that has been done. A band of hooligans while the llanies were at their height roamed round (Tib town looting unprotected stores. In some instances where people saved nearly everything from burning bindings, they found on returning u remove the thing, tint half of them were missing. The lock-up was amongst the buildings which suffered. The cells were destroved and the prisoners had to be secured in the prison yard, which is covered, with an iron grating. The silting of the Police Court was, held in the police stables. All the banks saved their books and valuables, and have resumed business
