PROVINCIAL NEWS.
RAHOTU. A general meeting of members of the Rahotu Athletic Club was held on Saturday night. There was a good attendance, and Mr Garcia presided. Mr W. C. Green, who has just removed to Tukapa, forwarded his resignation as secretary. The resignation was accepted with regret, and it was resolved to record on the minutes the club's appreciation of his services as secretary during the past two seasons. Mr. L. Fischer was appointed secretary and treasurer. Several new members were
elected, and the following officials were appointed:—Judges (running): Messrs A. Philips, A. Porteous, and S. Willoughliy; chopping, Messrs J. Rothery, J. Phillips and J. Clark; starters (running),
-Mr. A. 11. Condon, (chopping) Mr. A. Guv; clerk of course, Mr. W. It. Wright; result official, Mr. J. Hall; marshal, Mr. .1. Young; marksmen, Messrs. J. Groom, F. Bennic, and V. Tyrol!; wrestling, Mr. W. Duggan; handieappers, open events, Mr. F. Hardy, local, Messrs. W. Duggan, J. Phillips, and A. Baker; chopping committee, Messrs. D. Anglesea, S. Webb, J. Hall, 11. Phillips, W. Rothery, and the judges; sheep-guessing, Messrs. A. Phillips, J. Phillips, and J. Young; concert committee, Messrs. J. Garcia, J. Rothery, J. Hall, W. Symons, and 11. Phillips. A programme committee consisting of Messrs. Willoughby, Phillips (3), J. Hall, and the chairman and secretary was appointed to draw up a programme and submit same to a special meeting on Saturday, September 25th. Judging by the enthusiasm displayed, the coming sports should be most successful.
Mr. Willoughby, of Geraldinc, who has purchased Mr. Townsend's farm on the Kahui road, arrived in Kahotu on Saturday.
As Messrs. Porteous and H. Baker were driving to Opunake on Monday last, their horse stumbled through putting its foot in a hole. Both were thrown out on to the road, but fortunately escaped with a severe shaking. Mrs. and Miss Tyrell, who are shortly leaving for Wanganui after a residence of many years in Kahotu, were entertained at an "At Home" in the local
hall on Friday afternoon by the ladies of the district. Tlicri! was ii very large, attendance, considering the shortness <rf the notice. During tlie afternoon songs were rendered liy Mrs. Wright and Mi\ Fielder, and pianoforte selections l>y Mrs. West. Mr. Fielder, in a neat speech, voiced the regret felt at their departure from liahotu, and wished them prosperity in their new home. It had been intended to make a presentation as well, but, owing to the non-arrival of the presents, this function had to l« omitted, but the pressnts, he :' "timated, would be forwarded on. Measles are prevalent in the district at present, and on that account the Rahotu school is closed. Despite the rough weather, the supply of milk at the local factory is rapidly increasing, and there is every prospect of a successful season. Another social in aid of the local hall funds took place on Friday night, and proved very successful. There was a good attendance. Excellent music was voluntarily rendered by Miss Morgan and Mr. Synions, whilst extras were played by Miss Bowers and Mr. Willcox. Messrs. Willcox and Rothery made capable JLC.'s. During the evening supper was handed around. Rahotu is progressing slowly but surely. Another residence is being erected on the liauui road for Mr. A. J. Porteous.
