i' The chairman reported that a nuisujuce was being caused by the public making a thoroughfare of the grounds . attached io the Hospital and Old Peo- - plc'» Home. Mr l'V.rrar complained very 1 much 01 the practice, which was par--2 tieularly annoying on Saturday nights, lie further mentioned that recently an - inmate of tile Home went to the coal- > house and foun)l there a man who had • probably gone there with the intention | of stealing coal. Another complaint : was that tlowcrs were stolen from the ; beds at the nome. Mr Parker con- ■ sidered the Board should take some steps to put a stop to these nuisances, aii)l it should be made clear that the grounds were not a public thoroughfare. Mr McDonald suggested that this was a matter for the police. The House Committee were given nthority to act. SALARIES. The chairman suggested that the salaries at" the Hospital should be adjusted. Dr Walker was doing excellent work, and the matter in which he performed his duties was very satisfactory indeed. There was a groat flispnrity between the salaries of the medical superintendent and the assistant medical officer. Mr Parker also mentiof n1 the long Services rendered by Nurse Campbell, he considered was entitled to an increase of salary, lie thought that if the Board increased her saliry it would be an inducement to tin"'staff to stay at the Hospital, and suggested an increase to £SB or | £OO, which would lie midway between the lirst nurse and the principal nurse. Mr Brown thought that if the Board were going into the matter of adjusting salaries they should take the secretary's salary into consideration.—Referred to the House Committee. HOSPITAL LIBRARY. Ilic cost of the work was not to exceed £7 10s. The work was required with, a view of proventing leaivage. Mo decision had beta ,arrivivi at in regard to the advisability of increasing tiie number of male attendants, and reducing the number of female nurses at the Hospital. The (matter of enlarging the custodian's bedroom at the Home was referred to 'the House Committee. JiEDICAL REPORT.
I Dr Leatiiam reported that during the month 42 easea were admitted to the Hospital, and 40 discharged. There had Teen two deaths in the institution, and "32 patients remained. There had been nine operations. There were two cases of searletina, and there were three eases in the annexe, all women. GENERAL. The Board decided to revert to the old system of reading the minutes at the meeting. For two months, ou the motion of Mr Bellringer, the secretary bad been forwarding to members a typewritten copy of the minutes of the previous meeting the House Committee's reports, T)r LealiTa|m's and Mr Farrar's reports, and a list of letters sent out" CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. inc chairman reported that Mr Holmes had inspected the road to the Ilospitar. and instead of a concrete retaining wall for the road across the gully near the old morgue site, lie recommended an earth filling He estimated that frtJO yards would be required. The consumption of gas has shown a reduction of 50 per cent as compared with the previous month. The gas stoves had been found to be sadly out of repair, and had been attended to. •T. H. Pellcw had been appointed in Ilayter's place.
Mr Parker said there. lia.l been a good deal of sickness at the Home. When he visited the institution several of the inmates had expressed their gratitude for the careful and kind treatment they hud l'ereived. .Ay their expressions had been spontaneous they were all file more pleasing to h(m and crrtlitable fo the staff. He recommended that visiting days at the Home should lie fhc a nmo fts ;if tlio TTospitn!. The nam" of ?Tiss C.wladvys Evelyn Boseawen, of New Plymouth, was added to the' probationers' list. DESTRUCTOR. The following tenders were received for the erection of a destructor at the Hospital:—Messrs Roon Tiros., £7O- \ .Clill', 1-80; .1. Salt, COl 10s;' Coleman |and Son, Cm 10s. The tender of Messrs yoon Bros, was accepted.
