Yesterday's cutting gale was ruinous to young crops in exposed situations. Some d 1 those "'gentle zephyrs of spring" that we read about wo?ild be welcome.

A fen- weeks ago a coffin and corpse made a precipitous descent into a grave al Tc ileum Cemetery, the result- of employing ropes of frailty. Yesterday whilst a body was being carried on the bier to the graveside a handle of the bier broke, and one end dropped heavily to earth. There's need for some radical change in the management of these things. There should bo no chance of such awkward happenings at a time when hearts are sore with the grief occasioned by the last call.

Tiic secretary of the North Island Brass Baiuls Association Jias written that it is not the intention to grade tlie bands in the quickstep competition. All competing bands will be on the same footing.

The usual fortnijjhlly meeting of the Loyal Egmont Lodge was held last night. 13ro. A. Ilookor, N. 0., presiding. Owing to the attractions at the Theatre, there was a small attendance. A resolution was passed that the secretary communicate with the member for t.iio. district (.Mr. H. Okey) and request him to urge on the Government the desirability of dealing with the Friendly Societies Act this session on the lines suggested by the Friendly Societies Conference held in Wellington in May, liKHi.

The secretary of the Band Contest Committee is ill receipt of ft letter from the secretary of the North Island Brass Bands Association in answer to the letter regarding the possibility of Australian bands competing here at the February contest. Mr. Holben writes: "It was the intention of Code's Melbourne Brass Band to compete at the Exhibition contest, hut owing to unforeseen circumstances and some of the men not being able to get away at the last moment the trip had to be abandoned. However, the secretary wrote assuring me that the band had every intention of visiting New Zealand in the near future. Possibly they may be induced to come over for the forthcoming contest. I will write by the next outgoing mail and ascertain what their intentions arc. No doubt you are aware that Mr. Code has ad- ] judicatcd at two of our contests, and has therefore got a very good idea of the abilities of New Zealand bands. There is also Lieutenant W. G. Bentley's band, known as the New South Wales State Military Band. It is possible that this band may be induced to come over. Again, we have the Newton Brass Band under the conductorship of Tom Mcllor. It is -also possible that this bband may be induced to come over. Lastly, there is the Newcastle Brass Band, which attended the Exhibition contest."
