The Daily News SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14. THE MARSLAND HILL MEMORIAL.
There is a sac-red duty devolving on the present generation in this province to perpetuate the memory of those who fought and died during the early wars and laid the foundations of the prosperity we, their successors, enjoy. Throughout the length and breadth of the land, monuments have been erected to the memory of sons of New Zealand who laid down their lives fighting a cause in South Africa that was but indirectly theirs. How much more deserving of perpetuation on the scroll of time are the names and deeds of those, who died in our own land for the safety of our mothers and of their hearths and homes? That none of Taranaki's future sons and daughters should have reason to forget what they owe to the founders of th> province, and while yet there remain numbers of those who shouldered the rifle against a courageous foe, it is opportune to take steps to raise such a national memorial as it is proposed to erect on the historical crest of Jlarslaud Hill. The appeal has, up to the present, met with liberal response,-but to our mind not one in the slightest degree commensurate with young Taranaki's obligation. The memorial should be one of ambitious proportions, outstanding and commanding, one that- will for ever recall the dark and historical days of the province. Such an one, however, will not rear itself on expressions of gratitude alone,—money is essential. W-> trust, therefore, that those, and there are very many, who have not yet contributed will open their purse-s'trings. The committee in charge of the arrangements will be pleased to receive and acknowledge donations,—and none is too small for acknowledgment. We should take a lesson from America; where the memory of patriots is vigilantly kept green.
