TRAGEDY OF INFATUATION.
MAN HUNT IN NEW YORK. New York, July 23. Frank Warner, an old man and a bankrupt, crazed with love for a beautiful girl, Ester Norling, formerly in his employ, established a record in New York crime to-day by committing a double murder and firing indiscriminately at his pursuers through the busiest sections of the city, eluding twenty timid policemen by means of a winding staircase, a lire escape, and a subway train. Miss Norling, who consistently refused to countenance the attentions of Warner, was shot iu the. back this morning as she entered a furniture store in 42mfslrcel, where she is cashier. The old man next turned the pistol unsuccessfully on her employer, Mr Spicer, and calmly walked out of the shop, firing a third shot at a man, Newsbery, who bravely attempted to prevent his escape.
Making his way to the Spicer Building, he ran upstairs, firing at a policeman who followed. Soon 20 policemen gathered in the building. While they timidly deliberated, the criminal descended the fire-escape and through the motor-garage, finally boarding a subway train.
There the trail ended until four hours later, when Warner, armed, with a fresh pistol, entered a hat shop in Waverleyplace belonging to an old friend named Wilson. He asked for the loan of £2. Wilson, ignorant of the murder of Miss Norling, was about to comply, when Warner shot him twice in the back. With the pistol still smoking, ho passed through the shop full of affrighted salesmen, sauntering away along the pavement, when a man, whom he also attempted to shoot, secured him with a large hook. Dreadfully injured, the crazy old man, who was deputy sheriff of Buffalo once, was carried to Bellevue Hospital, where he now lies.
