NEW SPEED RECORD.
AUTOMOBILE RUNS NEARLY 500 MILES AT THE RATE OF 70.6 MILES AN HOUR.
Dieppe, July 3. With a wonderful display of coolness, nerve and endurance, Nazzaro, the Italian champion, in a Fiat machine, to-day captured the automobile (Jrand Prix (a little short of 500 miles), at an average speed of 113.0 kilometres (70.6 miles) nn hour, breaking the world's record. The pace was killing from the start, leaving a score of cars hopelessly beaten liefore the second round was ended. The race was full of surprises. Nazzaro was not prominent early in the contest. Lancia, also in a Fiav, took the first three laps, and when he broke down at the third and surrendered the lead to Duray, the latter, in a Lorraine de Dietrich, as he reeled olf lap after lap under forty minutes, looked an easy winner, but on entering the ninth round a broken bearing put his ear out of action, and he was forced to retire, amidst the plaudits of the crowds. In the meantime, Nazzaro. riding hard, but cool and steady, overhauled Lancia. and when Duray dropped out he continued on, unhealed, to the finish. Szisz, in a Renault, come up from the ruck, and made a gallant but unavailing effort during the last two laps to overtake the flying leader. Lancia's gasoline gave out in the final round, permitting Baras, in a Brasier, to finish third. Nazzaro's brilliant victory was acknowledged by all, but the heart had been taken out of the crowd by Duray's accident, and the French thousands received tile news coldly. The times of the first and second men were as follows:—Nazzaro, 6 hours, 46 minutes 33 seconds; Szisz, 6 hours 53 minutes 10 seconds.
