The Daily News SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7.
Mr. 11. Cameron has disposed of his j inter.'st in the Tariki Hotel to a Mr. j Sim, of the Napier district. Captain Edwin wired yesterday:— Southerly moderate to strong winds; glass rise slowly; tides moderate; iea moderate; probabblby frost to-night. The Rugby Union first junior challenge cup, which was won by the Star juniors this season, is now on view in Messrs. Clarke Bros.' window, Brougham-street. Good progress is being made with the erection of the large tinning works at Waitara for Messrs. Thomas Borthwick and Sons (Australasia), Limited. The buildings are in brick, and will be of two floors.
A young man named Richard Reinold Reyfuss was brought to New Plymouth from Hawcra last night to be placed under medical observation, consequent on an attempt to end his existence by [cutting his throat.
'•Coming events east their shadows before." At the Clifton County Council meeting yesterday the members discussed the possibility of the county 'offices being erected in Urenui at no distant date.
The new pound at Urenui does not seem to be a very popular institution. Larrikins or others antagonistic persons have lately been in the habit of allowing the water to escap.' from the tank, whilst others have now gone one better in their mischief, having recently pierced holes in the tank to render it useless for th.' purpose of watering stock.
At a meeting held in New Plymouth this week it was decided to take steps to erect a stone marking the restingplace of the late member for Taranaki, Mr. E. M. Smith, in the Te Henui cemetery. In order to make the movement as'wide as possible, and to include all the portions of the province at different times represented by the late member, it was decided to limit subscriptions to one shilling. The subscription lists are to be-shortly circulated, ami there will, we hope, be a liberal response to an appeal that should be in no sense limited to party supporters.
