LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A first-o (lending drunk was yesterday morning fined 5s and costs at the local Police Court. Jlr 11. 1\ Russell, Justice, presided.

Captain Edwin wired yesterday:— Southerly heavy gale; glass rise soon; tides very high; sea very heavy; rain heavy; and much colder weather.

Good Templary is advancing in New Plymouth. The local lodge of total abstainers now numbers over a hundred members. Arrangements are being made lor the annual social, to lie held on the I'.Hit inst. for members and their invited friends.

"What we want," spoke tho temper-'; ance lecturer, "and what we Intend to j have, is a place where wo do not have I to see the drunkard," "I have found i tlint place," said a voice from the audi- ! cnce, "I've been there for a long time; I've just come out oE gaol." Complaint is made that the cattle grazing in the paddock adjoining the cemetery grounds occasionally break | through the fence and ramble about among the mounds which mark the last ! resting-place of the departed. Apart j altogether from the incongruity of the thing and the damage to the graves and gravestones which must surely result, | there's the annoying factor that tho pad- i dock from which the cattle stray is the ! borough property, and leased by the j Council for revenue purposes. It is i suggested as a remedy that in future j the paddock blie leased for'eropping only. I At the Fitzroy Hail last evening Mr! Herman Foston, who is advertised to' lecture at Whiteley Hall this evening,' delivered a capital lecture, illustrated; with views showing the scenes and historical places, together with the early reformers of temperance. The lecture was most entertaining and instructive. Mr G. 11. White sang "Tho Village Blacksmith" and "Abide With Me,' both items being appropriately illustrated with a series of beautiful views, giving! e/lect to tho words while being sung, j At tho close of the lecture Mr Foston was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The lecturer comes with first-rate ere dontials as a public speaker, and all wiio can should attend Whiteley Hall this evening. To-night's lecture com mences at 7.30.

At the meeting of the New I'lywoiittf l Employers' Association last evening, a i member complained of the ma ■■. i| .which some employers are treated by. their men. A few weeks ago he en-! gaged a tradesman in Auckland, offered'! him a year's work, and paid his cx-j penses to New Plymouth. The inan stayed with him but it short period, and' one evening skipped by the light of llio l moon. The employer was left completely in the lurch, and was put to considerable inconvenience in tile carrying on of his work. The employer wanted to know if the law gave him power to recover the passage money from the workman, as well as a week's wages in lieu of notice. He explained in the latter connection that were anl employer to dismiss a workman without notice the latter would have a legal claim on him to the extent of a week's wages, and, this being so, it was only* logical and equitable, that the employer should be given similar power and protection. The opinion was expressed that any arrangement in regard _ to notieo should cut both ways, and if it did not under our present industrial laws, it should be made to do so. The Association decided to obtain a legal opinion on the matter, and to support the particular employer concerned if he decides to take the matter to Court.
