per Press Association. Blenheim, Monday. A lire occurred yesterday in a threeroomed cottage in Percy street. The charred body, of a wan, believed by the po.ice to be Thomas Dimkley, a carpentpr and a prohibited person, has been extricated. Deceased had been drinking during the last few . days. Blenheim, Monday Night. The inquest on Thomas' Duuckley, whose remains were found in lub cottage which was burned down on Sunday morning, was adjourned till Thursday to allow of further evidence being procured. Hamilton, Monday. At the adjourned inquest concerning the death' of Patrick McSweeney, the medical evidence pointed to the probability of deceased having been alive when lie entered the water. There were no marks of violence. A verdict 'jf death by drowning was returned. Gisborne, Monday.

Further particulars have been received of the Haupiri boat fatality. A heavy sea struck the boat when it was returning to the ship. Besides sweeping the man Lawrence overboard, it cause! the crew to lose their oars, leaving only the stcer-oar to work the boat. Lawrence was not a good swimmer. He soon sank. Those in the boat had difficulty in getting back to the steamer. Lawrence's body has not yet been recovered. i ■ Auckland, Last Night. An elderly lady named Ann Lindsay, a widow 00 years of age, who resided with her sons at Epsom, was killed in I Queen-street this afternoon. She was crossing the road, when, in avoiding a tram, she ran into one of Messrs. A.: B. Wright and' Sons express-carts. The driver did his utmost to pull the horse up, but was unable to do so. The horse appeared to strike the woman on the head. She was carried into a shop, and Dr. Jones was soon in attendance, hut could only pronounce life extinct. Masterton, Last Night.

An inquest was held at Matailcona on Saturday last on the body of Patrick Hanning, who was found dead in his whare on Friday last with a gunshot wound in his head. After hearing evidence, the jury returned a verdict that deceased committed suicide while of unsound mind. , Thames, East Night. The body of Frederick Neave, who was drowned'in the Piako river on Friday, was recovered on Sunday by dragging. The inquest elicited no new facts. The opinion was expressed that deceased was asleep at the stern ot the boat, woke up suddenly, and toppled over in fright. A verdict of accidentally drowned was returned.

Onmnru, last Night. A farmer at Georgetown named James Fleming is supposed lo have been drowned in the Waitaßi river about midday. He started to ride across to Hedcliff on the opposite bank, and later his horse returned riderless, with one stirrup gone. The river has been low for some time, but the late rains have swollen it somewhat. The settlers were in the habit of crossing on horseback, and it is supposed tliat Fleming was washed off in the* river, which runs very swiftly. He "was a son of the late Neil Fleming, a well-known auctioneer here some years ago. Search parties go out in the morning There is a faint hope tliat he may have reached one of the numerous islands in the river.

Wellington, Last Night. Charles "William, Whiteford, 47 years of age, while engaged on telegraph line work at Kilbirnie this afternoon, fell to one side of this ladder on which lie was working. When taken down by his mate he was dead, it is supposed from heart disease. Whiteford leaves a widow and three or fonr children.
