STRANGE INCIDENT AT SEA.
Per Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. 1 Captain Rose, of the schooner Ysabel, arrived from Tonga to-day. He reports that when in the locality of the submarine disturbances, previously reported (the chart showing 1003 fathoms) a terrific explosion was'heard. Several of the crew declared the vessel had struck something. The mate went aloft and reported shoal water ahead and' on both bows. The Ysabel was running before a north-east gale, and the position was serious." Another shock shook the vessel from stem to stern. The (pumps were used, but drew no water, and the shoal reported proved ' only cloudy water . A smell of sulphur was very pronounced. A third and last shock was experienced at 6 p.m. as darkness was setting in. The locality was latitude 21.18 S., long. 175.47 W It was a very dark Mid rainy night, and nothjng could be sefih as to the cause of tho disturbance.
