The case of Florence Isabella Hall v. the New Zealand Times Company, Ltd., has been settled.

Captain Edwin wired yesterday at 1.7 p.m.:—Northerly strong winds to gale; glass fall; tides high; sea heavy; rain prohably heavy. The eight accused in connection with the Opunakc "tarring <.nd feathering" incident, on entering the court yesterday, made their way into the jury benches. The first witness, who was the 'victim of the wrath of the Opunake folk, struck out for Cue prisoner's dock, but was fended off, and directed to the witness box.

I During the bearing of the Opunake rose yesterday a witness handed to the I Magistrate the rope which had been u«ed in dragging a man down the road and round about. Mr Fitzhcrbert eyed the Sinot on it for some time, and then remarked that he knew a good deal about knotting and splicing, hut he didn't know that knot. 'lt must bo an upuuako knot?' he added.

Tlio Hunt Club held a very successful social at the Bell Block hall on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance, dancing and cards forming the programme. The hall had been nicely decorated, and the general arrangements were excellent. Messrs A. 11. Street and A. Cliff were M.C.'s, arid Miss Sampson supplied the music. Thanks are due to the untiring ladies' committee for much of the success of the social. During the evening Mr Cliff presented trophies won during the season. There was a record attendance at the Railway Social Club's euchre party in the Brougham street hall, given in aid of the Western Park funds. About a hundred and twenty took part in the ouchre tournament of twenty games. In the ladies' section Mrs Whittle won the first prize with 15 games, and Miss Andrews the second with 14. Mr S. George won 18 games, and took the gentlemen's first prize. Messrs A. Higgs and Kelly played off for second place, each having won 15 games. The latter, won the final. After a splendid supper_had been served, dancing was indulged in, to excellent music supplied by Mrs George. Messrs J. Hoskin and N'. Ford were the M.C.'s. There was a. capital, floor, and the dance proved wholly enjoyable. The club are fortunate in possessing an enthusiast such as Mr Gardiner, who works heart aud soul for the success of these euchre parties. In order to help the Western Park the committee secured the , hallrTnusic and chairs at half usual t rates, and the fnnds should benefit to the ■ extent of about £5 or £6.
