IN MEMORIAM.
THE HUSH BRIGADE OJf 1745. % CELTIC CROSS ERECTED AX i'ON- ■*i TENOY. Received 20th, 10.22 p.m. London, August 2*). J. P. Nannetti, Lord Mayor of Dublin, unveiled a Celtic cross at fontoi.oy, commeiniuorative of the gallantry of tlie I Irish Brigade in 1745. '
(Fontenoy is a snfall village in ]}elgium, where, pn May 11,1715, the French under Marshal Saxe, deieated the Allies (English, Dutch, and Austrians), under the Duke of Cumberland. The victory, was in great -measure due to the courage of the Irish Brigade in the French army. For several years, particularly from the year in which the Treaty of Limerick (1690) was signed, to the date of this batUe some thousands of Irishmen, enlisted in the service, of several Continental nations, particularly the service of France. This battle was fought bitterly. For some hours it wag doubtful what would be the result of ■ the battle, as one time—"The Duke of Cumberland'beheld with anxious eyes, And ordered up his last reserve his latest chance to try." This brought the French to their senses —they were practically beaten—everything was lost, and in despair the King of the French "... turned his rein,
'Not yet, my Liege/ Saxe interposed, the Irish troops remain." When the King of England heard the result of the battle, and the cause of the victory, he exclaimed: "Cursed be the laws that deprive one of such subjects."
