THE lIUATOKI DIVERSION
Mr H. C. Hughes, on behalf of Mr C. Webster and himself, asked permission to peruse all correspondence in connection with the liiuitoki deviation. Tlwy intended to oppose the deviation by every legal means.—The. Mayor said these ratepayers had every right to examine ths minutes. But he thought it highly inadvisable to allow Mr Hughes to inspect the correspondence with n view to taking action against] the Council. The Council had taken n.o pi.rt in and given no consent to the deviation.—Mr Hughes will be allowed to inspect nil matters which lie is legally entitled to do.

Tiie Abattoirs Committee recommended, inter alia, that the head slaughterman be refunded the sum of £2 paul) by him for a man to replace him during the week he was on holiday, andthat each employee who had been in. the service of the Council for at le- «t a year should have a week s holiday on full pav in each year. In answer to Cr. Mills, the Mayor j stated that the abattoir staff worked . all hours—there was no eight hours day tb f!r' Mills thought it a dangerous innovation unless it were a rule at abattoirs elsewhere. Cr. Bellringer said that there weie not two abattoirs in the colony workin" on exactly equal conditions. < lid, prophesied that very shortly there would be a more economical and satisfactory system of working the abattoirs. The contract Bysteni would piobahlv lie introduced, fle himself was not at all pleased with the working at present. The report was adopted. WOKKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee recommended, inter alia, that the applications oi Messrs M. Fleetwood and Carthew lor suburban water services be acceded to; that tho engineer report on the advisability of making a test of petroleum for keeping down dust in the streets, and that tho foreman test the value oi gaol gravel for road repairs; that Ibe Taranaki County Council be granted the use oi the asphalting boiler and lollcr at £1 per week for asphalting the Waiwukaiho bridge; that the Council cannot accept less than £25 a yea from the Fitzroy Town Board for wbc upkeep of the Clemow road; that the District Engineer of Railways be informed that the Council mil give the department access to Waimanu sti»et when required for the purpose of erecting ai footbridge; that the Barrett Road Board 'be informed that a: further expenditure of £42 will be required to provide a cart track in Outfield rojlil between Fulford street and Vivian street, and they be asked to contribji-O' £2l, the earth being taken from A ivian street. —Adopted. ELECTRIC LIGHT.
The Electric Light Committee recommended a progress payment of £U»4 10s to Messrs Turnbull and Jones on account of their contract for electrical plant supply.—Adopted. LEAVE OF ABSENCE, Or. Boon was granted leave of fbJ sence from the Council during his absence from New Plymouth; and Jro Town Clerk was granted leave for two weeks from 23rd September next.
