TARANAKI TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Taranaki Touchers' Institute was held at Stratford on Siturday. There was a large attendance of teachers, a good luraijbcr travelling from New Plymouth. Mr Tyrer, vice-president, presided, and re.id an apology for the absence of jiio secretary (Mr 'a. Gray). Mr Mcllroy was appointed sKcvctftvy pro tern. The annual report was read and adopted, on the motion of Mr W. J. Evans'', seconded' by Mr Barry. Mr F. W. Sandford was elected a' member of the. Institute.
Correspondence wis read from the General Soeretary New Zealand Educa; tion Institute re promotion scheme <ini\ pupil teacher scheme proposed by Auckland Headmasters' Association; from editor Otago Daily Times re holding Standard VT. examinations in all schools ut Christmas, and from Mr A. V. Sims enclosing a suggested resolution re the School Journal.—Mr W. J. Evans moved that this Institute expresses the opinion that no promotion scheme that is not colonial will give satisfaction.—! Seconded by Mr Johnson. The motion was strongly supported by Mrs Bowling and Mr Tyrer, and carried. Mr Tyrer moved that circular re pupil teachws and letter from Otago Daily Times be referred to the Executive. Seconded by Mrs Dowling and carried. Mr Mcllroy moved that the Hon. the Minister for Education be respectfully asked to state which readers the School Journal is to replace, and that the resolution be sent through the Inspectors. Seconded by Mr Tyrer and cirried. Mr Johnson wished to withdraw his motion, "That New Plymouth be the main District Institute, and that branches be formed, at suitable centres"; but Mr Kice proposed an amendment. "That the Stratford and New Plymouth branches be amalgamated and meet >.lternately at New Plymouth and Stratford." The amendment was carried. Mrs Dowling moved that the incoming secretary he instructed to accept subscriptions for the current year only (ending 30th June, 1008), and that the matter of the accounts be left to the Executive. Seconded by Mr Tyrer and carried.
The following were elected as the ifficers 'for the year ending 30th June, 1008: President, Mr J. W. Mail; vicepresidents, Mrs Dowling and Mr .F. Tyrer; secretary, Mr R. L. McTlroy, M.A.; executive, Messrs H. Stratford, 0. Johnson, and W. J- Evans; auditor Mr J. Hunter, M.A.
Mr Rice proposed that holidays be given in Taranaki similar to those in other districts. Mrs Dowling read a list of holidays given in other districts, ranging from eight to ten weeks in the vear. Mr Rice said he proposed the motion in the interests of the Taranaki children, who had much more work to do at home for their parents than the children in other parts of the Dominion and yet .have to do more work at school Mr tyrer moved that a remit he sent to tho annual conference of the Naw Zealand Education Institute: "that the Education Department fix tho amount of holidays and leave the Boards and Committees to arrange the dates." The amendment was seconded by Mr Hunter and carried. Mr Johnson moved that the Executive revise the byelaws of the Institute—Carried. Mr W. J. Evans moved a hearty vote of thanks to the New Plymouth tenfi chevs for attending in such large, numbers. Seconded by Mr Tyrer, who was pleased at tho hearty tone of the meeting. Mr Johnson, replying for the New Plymouth teachers, said *he thought that after that day's meeting the Institute was in for an era of prosperity. This closed one of the most successful meetings of the Institute ever held in Taranaki.
