FRENCH SUGGEST RETALIATION. Sydney, August 23. After eareful consideration of (he new tariff the French C'hamljer of Coiumevre at Sydney communicated with the French Government suggesting retalia tion. DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. Melbourne, August 23. A deputation of timber merchants asked the Minister of Customs to give increased protection to Australian timbers. The admission was made that Queensland timber was not so suitable a-s New Zealand pine for butter boxes. The suggestion was made that reciprocity should be arranged with New Zealand so that pine could be admitted free in return for the placing of Australian hard woods on the New Zealand free list. A deputation to the Federal Govern ment risked for concessions in connection with the boot and leather industries. Mr Bailey, of Sydney, said he hoped the duty on skiver? (inferior leather) would be retained. If this were done, his fun would remove their plant, at present in New Zealand, to Australia and start manufacturing skivers. Mr Austin Chapman promised to consider the matter.
