Auckland, August 20. Nicholson, Cunningham, Gillet aud tnwiu, the siieklaud members of the New Zealand team, returned from Australia by the ilokoia today. The first three were unable to travel South with the Auckland team which left this afternoon. Their places are liiled by Hooper and Walsh (Auckland) and Smith (Thames). AX INTERESTING POSITION.
In referring fo the professional move- > ment in Sydney, the Referee says: "The ■ Northern Union Rugby game differs from _ the Rugby Union game, in its rules as in ' its statu*, one of the provisions being • that 13 men constitute a side. How- ' ever, the Xew Zealand professionals will, ' it is said, play 15 aside in the Sydney matches. The names of certain Sydney players have been freely mentioned in connection with the three matches. In no case, however, are they men of any influence in the Rugby Union world, though in one or two cases they are | players of more or less prominence. H. Messenger has flatly denied any connection with the movement. If any old players here become associated with the professional element they may do so with some reasonable justification, perhaps, if their views on the amateur status are not firm. But any ycung player who delights in Rugby "footbaU, and desires to continue an active participant in the game, will be wise to verv svrimnly consider before deciding to take a step which must for ever debar thorn from playing in Rugby Union matches, and completely cut 'him off from all Rugby Union football and its associations. . . . The laws of Rugby j Union football absolutely proscribe professionalism, so that it is impossible for amateurs and professionals to exist tin- - [der the one governing body. Genuine piofessionalism in any great snort is not .objectionable, provided that the government of tint spurt is kept strictly In the [bands of the amateurs. Hut the history of sports in which professionalism under false guises has worked its way, or in which professionals have a controlling influence, is the history of decay." I Despite this, however, we find Messenger, and such players as D'Alpnget, Fry, and Stunt/, in the New South Wales professional team.

The terms which have been hid down to the Northem Union clubs by the Select Committee appointed to deal with the matter are ,not regarded as satisfactory. The co,k>nials are guaranteed C3OOO. Good!
