PROVINCIAL NEWS.
WABEA. A social was tendered Mr A. Corbett and Miss L. Mac Donald on Thursday evening. There was a large gathering, visitors coming from all along the coast. The music was supplied by Mr D. Paterson, and extras were played by Miss M. Francis and Mrs Sefton. Mr I?. Anderson acted as M.C., and gave every satisfaction. Bongs were contributed by Messrs Bob Phillips and D. Paterson. During the evening Mr McLachlan presented the guests of the evening with a largo rattan chair each. Mr A. Corbett responded, and thanked the people for the way they had treated hiin. Mr Mac Donald also returned thanks on lichalf of his daughter, Miss Mac Donald. Dancing was kept going until the early .hours of the following morning. A rifle match was held at the range on Saturday against Oakurn. The weather was beautifully fine, and a good number were present. After the match the visitors were entertained at tea in the hall, and afterwards they were to have been entertained at a smoke concert, but owing to an accident to the hamper the entertainment' had to be abandoned. | The annual metting of the Rahotu Athletic Club was held on Saturday evening. There was a very good attendance of members. Mr.J. Garcia presided The balance sheet showed a credit in hand of £22 8s Od, the last sports meeting showing a profit of over £(j. The principals receipts were—Gate £3O 3". concert and dance £2: l 17s, members' i-;i'is. £lO 15s, nominations and accept- ; 'i es ,125 ss; and the principal expenditure was prize money £(io las. The balance sheet was considered most satisfactory. Several new members were proposed and elected. It was decided to hold the sports next year on New Year's Day, as that day is'now free, the Pihama races being held on March 17th. Officers were elected as follows:—Presidents, A. If;. At a committee meeting hold immediately after the annual meeting the following were elected a management committee:—Messrs .T. Garcia, ,1. Kotherv, ■l. Phil lips, A. Porteous, 1.. Fischer, T. Parsons, A. Phillips, W, Dttggan, A. Chapman, T. Conroy, V. Tyrcll, H. A. Mills, J. Hall, and .las. Rothery. On Thrnsday evening at the Salvation Army barracks, Mr W. ,1. Corkin gave a most interesting and instructive entertainment and address on the Army social work. There was a large attendance. A programme of varied items, consisting of solos, quartettes, recitations, instrumental solos, quartettes, and selections were rendered on the phonograph clearly and distinctly, an 3 was much appreciated by the audience. An
address by General l!ooth on social work atentively listened to. In putting on this item Mr Corkin took advantage to place before the audience in a clear and lucid manner the blessings provided for fallen humanity. He showed the working of the different departments of social work/and asked the audience to assist this work by taking a (1.8.M. box and putting tficrcln no less than one shilling a week. Great preparations are being made to ensure the success of the bazaar which is to be held here on Friday and Saturday in aid of the Methodist Parsonage
fnml. /The contractors for the erection of additions to Air T. P. Hughson's residence are making good progress with the work. When completed the house will add greatly to the apearancc of the township.
