LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Captain Edwin advised yesterday: Westerly strong winds to gale; glass rise; tides high; sea heavy; rain pro liable.

Newton King has received a cable from his Sydney agent advising that the market for hides is a shade easier

During the early part of yesterday morning a violent storm raged. The rain poured down, the wind blew with Titanic strength, and the lightning was never more vivid. It was an awful night. What made it worse was the inky darkness. The unfortunate who was out at the time could not see his baud in front of him. It was the kind of night that the person whose business took him outdoors would have appreciated the illumination of the street lamps. Just because it was such a black, wild and unpleasant night, the street lamps of the town were not alight. If it had been a fine, bright, moonlight night, the electric light would doubtless have been burning merrily. There are at present thirty-four children in the custody of tho Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. There are fourteen under fourteen years of age, and these are at the home in charge of Misji Oveudeu, Three girls and three boys are placed out at service on farms as domestic helps, and there are fourteen boarded out with people who are paid by the Board for the care of the children The chairman of the Hospital Board stated yesterelay that he had recently visited Miss Ovendeu's, and found the children looking very healthy and well cared for, every one attending school regularly. A gentleman living in Die back country who wished to keep his family, who resided in town, supplied with mutton from his estate, arranged with a local carrying company 'to transport a carcase occasionally, ft was noticed (says the Timaru Herald) by the freight handlers that the sheep forwarded were gradually increasing in weight—GO, 80, 90, JOO and 1101b were the gradations. When the last figure was touched, an examination of the carcase showed that the inside of the sheep was filled with vegetables, butter, and other dairy produce. The need of a revised tariff was at once apparent.

Domestic infelicity is often represented to the Charitable Aid officials as a reason for admission of old people to the Old People's Home at New Plymouth. When an old man or old woman in declining years becomes irritable and unbearable, to the extent that tho family can no longer live peacefully together, on attempt is made, to introduce this leaven of infelicity and bad temper into the Home The management, however, has taken a firm stand in this matter, and has decided that domestic infelicity is not a sufficient reason for admission to the Home, which is intended for the indigent poor and not for crabby old folks of means.

Mr J. B. Jack, district agent of the Public Trust Office, has written to the Hospital Board forwarding an Indian war medal and a New Zealand war medal which comprised the estate of the late Nathaniel Grimes, an old colonist and war veteran, who was recently burned to death at Urenui. As the deceased was at one time an inmate of the Old People's Home at New Plymouth, he suggested that the medals be placed in the show-case with the medals of deceased inmates at the Home. The Board has accepted the gift and disposed of it as suggested.
