prop Kick" writes: The Taranaki juniors put up a fair light against Auckland on Saturday, but there were weak points for which the selectors were responsible. It was among the forwards that the battle waged, and here were two great weakuess-Flurlcv and Win tors. As a hooker, the first-named was not in the same flight as his opponents, •uid certainly not in it with hi-, little colleague Drown. Neither in the test match at Stratford nor. in the game against AYanganui did the burly Hurler justify his inclusion i„ the team, anil if ever he had any claim for selection he threw it to the wind on Saturday. In reaching out for brawn the selectors passed by the necessity for brain. North nearly always beats South, and the laranaki Cup is generally found in the locker of a North Taranaki team, let the South nearly always has the majority of reps., and vhv? 'Because of the flavor of the 180.3 team, which had | its_ great men from South Taranaki. This tendency, so noticeable in senior football, is again in evidence in junior selection. The failures in Saturday's team hailed from the South, though that end supplied one or two top-notch-ers. How did Crowley's half-back display compare with Wellcr's? Those forward ,-ushes would not have travelled far with -Snowy" on the ground. The half-back's work was wretched, and it nonplussed the other backs, who had to depend on his speed and skill in getting the ball away from the scrum. And why was Koni played Instead of the clever little Collins, of Stratford? The big three-quarter played n bmnning oame" without brain. Collins could bury him in clever work. The general opinion is that th- Star pack and the Star half would have brought the game to ;, ,ii|. ferent ending. Yet only one of (hat admittedly line lot of si-rummers found his way into the team. In conclusion, let 111,, urge selectors to strike out for pace and brain, not brawn only."
K. !•'. Hows, the Wuimate player who took a proinini'Ut p;irt in the trouble at Opunako, and whose conduct on that' occasion was severely commented U pon ! at the Magisterial hearing of the case,! is to appear before the Vnioii 1 at the next meeting of the mauagem jnt' couimittee and explain inaitcra. It will he remembered that the Union dealt very lightly with Howes, who w| shown at the Magistrate's Court to be the real aggressor in the disturbance, whilst indicting life disqualification upon Young. The union is acting wisMv in re-considering the case. Alter what tr.mspired in Court it onuld hurillv net otherwise and do the right thing by itself and by the parties concerned. At a meeting oC<xthe Management Committee of the Taranaki Rugbv I Union the suh-coimtvittee set up at a previous meeting reported on the application of the Koru, Okura, Okalo, Wnrca. and Pungarchu clubs to form a si(b-union. The committee recommended that a district bounded on the north hv the Tapuie river, on the smdh hv the Oeo river, and on (he east hv the existing club teiTitories, to he known as the Western Division, be formed: that Mie dub winning the championship of lac division play off with the Southern Division. These recommendations were subject (o the conditions: {]) That rail less than four cluhs compete: (21 that the virions cluhs in the Western Division shall arrange and determine their rcuiccilvc boundaries and submit same to the management committee. The. committee recommended that tliev be empowered to siflimit the proposals to the Opumko Club and Western Divisions. The report w,is adopted. A suggestion has been made for fiie] 1 nion to present two shields to he competed for by the school children of the Northern and Southern divisions. The Tirana Id I'ninn is making enquiries anil will probably take aclira in the matter before the commencement of next season. The Union would be well advised in giving every possible cneo.iragement to the school hovs—the ~lavers i "f the future.
