RACING IN AUSTRALIA. Received 18th, 5.8 p.m. Adelaide, August 18. The National Steeplehase resulted: Tarpon, 10.12, 1; Cool Breeze, 10.7, 2; Coat of Arms, U. 5, 3. Nine started. A mile from home the placed horses cleared right away from the rest of the Hold, and a good tinish resulted in a win for Tarpon by a length and a half. Dividend, £ti 18s.

TURF TOPICS. AVhilst in Sydney lately, Mr Sidney Pitt, of Stratford, ran'across "Moturoa" of the Taranaki Daily News, who, owing to the partial failure of ilia eyesight, has had to take a prolonged holiday. In company with '"Moturoa," Mr Pitt visited McGrath's well-known training establishment, and saw the New Zealandera —Mahutonga, Putty and the two year old Grafton, purchased by Mr Dan O'Brien, of New Plymouth. They all looked very well, and as if the climate was agreeing with them. Our readers will be pleased to learn that "Moturoa's" eyesight is improving considerably, and that he will shortly he returning to Taranaki.
When the last mail left England Orm« was nt the head of the winning sires' list, with £11,252. Small figures truly, when compared with the sum, £55,G25, won by descendants of St. Simon in 1900.
A sad accident happened in Queensland recently. A mare called Dolores, who had won the Trial Stakes an hour or two earlier, when subsequently contesting another race, ran full butt into * tree and killed herself and her rider, C. Oriffin, on the spot.
According to tlu£ Pahintua paper, Greenleaf was madiW screaming hot favorite for the Hack Handicap at the Woodlands Hunt Chi I) meeting, odds of 3 to 1 being laid on her. She was badlv beaten by Mrs Crowlov, who earved out .the six furlongs in 1.22 3-5. I Writing of Hewitt's caution by the steward* of Hurst Park, "Rapier"' says: "His excuse was that he thought Major Edwards would not like the mare knocked about. Major Edwards, I am suve, would not like any marcs to Ik; knocked about, but he likes just a' little suggestion of energy to be thrown into a finish. Hewitt, notwithstanding that he won on Lally, appears to be an exceedingly expensive importation, and we really have enough disappointing joekovs without them."
An English paper says that. Colonel Kirkwood sold a half-share of The White Knight for £10,500 before the Ascot Cup nice.
Trenton's be«t son, Aurum. is returning to Australia to take up stud duty at Oakleigh durftig the coming season. Aurum, who is a grandson of Instep, won his two-year-old races in great j *ty)p. carrying the full penalties, and Bays the Australasian, no three-year-old has ever equalled his performance in i the Melbourne Cup. when he carried S.G and ran third to Gatilus (7.8) and The drafter (7.7). with Bnmlook (fi.lt) and l'osilano just Wind him. Mrs Langtry gave Mr Wilson 500gns for Aurum, and was taften to England to race; but would not stand training. At the stud he not a prolific foal-getter, but go! a good filly in Aurina. Should he improve as a foal-getter in Australia, there is no reason why Aurum should not become the best of the Trenton
