ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE LORD ASHTOWN.
London,. August 15. Lord Ashtown, the noted Irish landlord, had a narrow escape from assassination at 2 o'clock yesterday morning. He believes the attempt was planned, not, locally, but in the West of Ireland, where he had been under police protection. His lordship was asleep in the room o.er the drawing-room at Qlonshiry Lodge, his shooting estate in County Wexford. The only other occupants of the lodge were the gamekeeper and his wife and two maids. An explosion, which was heard a mile' away, wrecked the drawing-room and v hurled the doors and furniture across t'ne hall It shattered his lordship's window-shutters and wrenched a. marble in.intlepiece in the bedroom from the wall. The curtains and carpet of the dz,i wing-room broke into flames, but the . fire was quickly extinguished. The miscreants had placed ft charge l of powder on the drawing-room window-- " ( sill with fragments of metal. A pot in a specially-made iron frame, • ~ which was intended to increase the forca of the explosion, was found with threo - fuses, each of which was burnt. Received 16th, 11.16 p.m. London, August 16. * Mr Birrell, replying to Labor members, declared the civic authorities at Belfast were justified in requisitioning the miltnry as a precautionary measure. Everyone deplored the deaths, but had the mob .obtained the mastery, the loss of life would have been terrible.
