AID TO PRIVATE BENEVOLENT INSTITUTIONS.
Per Press Association. Dunedin, August 15. At a meeting of the Charitable Aid jjuard to-day the question of contributions to private benevolent institutions or schools was considered. The Anglican denomination made an application for a contribution towards St. Mary's Orphanage, and one of the members of the Board claimed some consideration for the Presbyterian Orphanage. In support of the application the members of the Board generally considered these benevolent institutions were as much enti tied to assistance as the St. Vincent de Paul and denominational institutions at Nelson. The Board's solicitors advised that assistance could only be given to Gazetted institutions, which are recognised as industrial schools. The Board could, however, take over the Orphanage tinder Section 31 of the Act. It was resolved that the Board recommend the Government to place St. Mary's Orphanage on the list of schools receiving grants. This recommendation to apply to all denominational schools doing work of an equally benevolent character.
