BOROUGH ENGINEER'S REPORT.
THE WATERWORKS, in hi- report 10-llie Borough Council uii Monday liighi Mr A. il. Kendall, borough engineer, slated thai the power iiiiuii extension had been completed., and the water turned in alter u satisfactory lust. The new screens at the pipe-head were working well, and whilst allowing il lull llow oi water they now effectually prevented the passage of any matter i that would be in the least likely to damage Hie turbines at the station below. Iht lowering oi the 15-ineh water main
wi the Albert road, he wrote, had been a very trying and awkward job. owing to the state of the road at the completion of the lioad Board's earthwork contract carried out in wet weather. It was a job that should really have been held over lor fine summer weather, us the handling of eight chains of 15-inch mam m an impassable and narrow road was none too easy a matter; but in view of the damage that would occur to the pipes il exposed for any lengthened period, the engineer had the main lowered to a depth of four feet. To avoid emptying the reservoir and thus cutting oil the 'town water supply, Mr Kendall gut everything iu readiness and had the pipes disconnected, lowered, and re-eonncetcd in one day, keeping the men at work on the spot for fifteen hours.
THE ABATTOIIiS EXTENSION. He laid before the Council the plans and speciiieations for the chilling room building and machinery and pigstyes. He suggested that it it wore the Council s intention to proceed with the chilling room at once he would like instructions to call tenders.—Kefcrred to Abattoirs Committee. It Ul HUSH DESTItUCTOU. in this imiicr he reported that in accordance with instructions to take necessary steps to abate the nuisance at the rubbish depot, and to take down and re-eieet the existing fence at the rubbish depot with a view of limiting the area and that all surplus earth and street sweepings be utilised to cover up the rubbish deposited there, iie immediatclv took steps to effect compliance as far as lily m his power. He found the rubbish depot at that time covering an area of ground of one or two acres. This rubbish he had collected together and covered till tiie hue of the tip was reduced o tne smallest possible compass. The latter part „f the second instruction was, however, wry difficult to comply with, being a matter outside his control. As sections built up of unburned rubbish were not desirable for building sites, he suggested tint the most satisfactory way of dealing, with the matter would be by means of a destructor and borough collection of the rubbish, and if the cost of a destructor (£2000), whlli he previously submitted to the Council appeared too high, he would point out (hat jl was possible to obtain destructors '"'lt on similar lines, and which might be eipially satisfactory. Designs of destructors were among the plans and particulars which were awaiting the Cuneil's consideration. The design which he previously suggested was in his opinion one thai would allow for the expansion of the borougli, and also one that would prove (he mr„t satisfactory. One of Ihe oihers wuuhl cost about £3OO to erect, and would require the labor of one man almost continually. He believed (ho makers would guarantee eiTl-ciency.--Tliix matter was referred to the Works Committee.
