ToKACCO WORKS CLOSE DOWN. Melbourne, Augusut 1:1. The British and American Tobacco Company lias suspended production at its Melbourne works. The cause is the, uncertainty of trade on account- of the increase of duly and excise. Five hundred hands will be affected.
AX EXULISII VIEW. London, August li. The Westminster (iazelte states that England gains some advantage where her poods do not have to compete with the Commonwealth's manufactures. In other cases llritish goods are in a worse 'position under preference than before.
TARIFF COMMISSION lOXORED. I _ Melbourne, August 13. Sir John Quick complains that the work of the Tariff Commission has been completely ignored in the framing of the new tariff.
