The death is announced of Mr John Duncan, an old resident of Kaupokonui, at the age of 07. At Inglewood on Saturday, Mr \V. Collingwood, of Kaimata, was presented by his friends with an illuminated i.ddrcss and a gold watch and guard. Mr Oscar Johnston, headmaster at the Eitzroy school, is indisposed. He

Miss Montgomery has resigned the position of teacher nt the ElthaAn road school, having received an assistant teaebership at Carnarvon, in the Wnng wuii district. Mrs Birkett has been appointed temporarily to EHliam road. The Afhenie arrived at Wellington yesterday from England. Among the passengers were the following for New Plvmomli: Miss K. Heslop. Mr C V. mid Mrs McAllum, and Master McAUum.
It is understood that the Rev. .T. R. O.issell has been offered and aoec])to(l the position of vicar of St. Mary's Church, Unworn, in succession to Rev. •T. A. Jacob, resigned. Mr Cassell has for sonic time been in charge of Kiwilea parochial district—Star. I>. ,T. E. Williams, of tlic Cliinn Inland Mission, and Dr. Lyneli, died at C'hinkiang (Kaingsuj" in June. The former had heen engaged in medical mission work in China since 1800 (says a correspondent of the North China. Herald-, and Dr. Lynch was the port physician. Last winter 40,000 refugees from the famine districts gathered in Cliinkinng, and up to the time they wore taken sick the two doctors ministiv-'d to hundreds of sick refugees. Dr. Williams was stricken with fever in May, and Dr. Lynch ministered to llim, until he himself was attacked. Thoy died wifhin a week of each other. There nre few people living who vememher seeing Sir 'Walter Scott, hut one is Mr William Lt'cs. who recently celebrated tile (10l.li anniversary of hi'« wedding. Mr Lees, who is a native of Edinburgh, saw the great, novelist on the North Bridge. The hoy's uncle, wio accompanied him, pointed to a gentleman dressed in a light, hrown hat. green coat, striped vest, and cashmere trousers, and asked him if he knew who he was. The iioy recognised Scott from his puhlished portrait. Another of ihe reminiscences of Mr Lees is having seen the first train from Edinburgh to Glasgow start on its journey.
