NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held last night, when [here were piesent: The Mayor (Mr E. Dockrill), presiding. Crs. I'.rowne, Cunt ley, Morey, Mills, C-ollis, Pikotl, Colmaii, Rellringer, and Bond.

The Valuation Department forwarded £3Sn 5s subsidy on rates collected.Received.

I Mr M. Fleetwood applied to have the water main extended to the boundary of this section at the end of Kowhai slreeL Fitzroy.—Referred to the Works Committee.

OFFICKUS AT VARIANCE. The. Borough engineer, Mr A. 11. Kendall, wrote limt on Saturday, 10th, he received a k'tter from the Town Clerk drawing attention to non-com-pliance with instructions previously given re scouring water mains. lie stated that he had repeatedly verbally instructed the turncock to use a length of hose when scouring drain*. lie also conveyed the omphalic instructions of

the Works Committee dated July 27 to ;ho borough turncock, anil ho regretted

that the instructions of the committee have been ignored.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee. REPORTS.

The abattoirs' report (with the exception of the question of holidays and a claim for refund of back pay in connection therewith which were referred to the committee, for reports) anil the foreman's report were adopted. The, engineer's report (held over for publication) was received. The Works. Committee's report, already published, was adopted. The Finance Committee's report, allowing bank overdraft £717!) lis 4d, and accounts to pass £348 2s Oil, was adopted. Receipts for the month were £2272 IDs 7d. The Reserves' Committee recommended that they be authorised to take .the necessary steps to lease the Old Hospital site, and also section 7i)2. New Plymouth, for periods of 21

years, with rights of renewal on the usual terms; that Messrs Sorensen, Drake, and J'. S. Vales be approached re land on east bank of the Waiwakaiho

River opposite the, waterworks, belonging to the Council, with a view of leasing such land to them from year to year until the land is required by the Council; recommendations were also made for renovations at the cemetery at a total rest of £27 7s lid.-Cr. Mills drew attention to the ill-ventilation of the mortuarv chapel, and moved that tin: matter be referred to the committee to have the ventilation'improved. Seconded by Cr. iielbinger, and the report was

adopted. The matter of having improved access to the cemetery, and a

less cumbersome bier constructed, was also referred to committee.

The Electric Light Committee's recommendation that, until the lighting of the Town Clock is completed, the charge to lie paid by the Council be at the rate of £2O per annum; that the matter of closing the contract for tin power house be referred to the Borough Engineer, with power to act on his being satisfied that the contract has been completed as amended by the committee—Adopted. Cr. llellringer asked that the Council should place cu record its appreciation of the mamuT in which the borough engineer made the connection from the intake to the power house. Cr. l'iketl moved that the sergeant of police be thanked for the vigilance shown by his stall' In some quartets in regard to the borough bye-laws, RUd requested to continue to display the same energy in other directions. in the future, it was time the question was entered into seriously, lie spoke of the saving that would be ell'eeted on the roads and advanced further arguments in support. Cr Collis seconded. Or. Mills said he would vote against the proposal, as he did not think the time was ripe for municipal enterprise developing in this direction. He would not be averse to private enterprise taking the matter up. The Mayor pointed out that the late Council had entered to a slight extent into the mailer in connection with certain proposals made by the linn of Iloberts and .Stokes, ' and that .Mr (leorge. nf the linn of (ieorge and Sinko-, had intended looking into the mailer when in England, the Council having submitted certain conditions on which it would be prepared to treat if approached. Cr. ISellriugcr suggested that consideration Ire deferred lor a fortnight, with a view to placing fuller data before the Council. This siigirestion was agreed to. INTEC'I'IOCS DISEASES.
