SUSPECTED TRAGEDY.
Per Press Assoiiatlol. Auckland, August 12. A policeman on duty at Ponsonby Btation was informed at a quarter past itcn last night by a man named Mar-"" shall that a young couple had fallen from a rock overhanging the water at Shelly Beach. Marshall stated that while he was near the beach about 16 o'clock, he heard a splash followed by a girl's screams and the cry, "Leo, don't Leo take me with you!" Then, he says, he heard a second splash. Looking in the direction of the sound he saw only ripples on the water as if it had been recently disturbed. Instead of going to the spot he ran to the police station to give the alarm. Two constables accompanied by Mr J. H. Upton were soon on the scene; but after rowing about for two hours, they found no signs of the tragedy. The police resumed the search this morning;
