BOXING.

TilE MIIU'HY-Tl'llOKY CONTEST. There was a good attendance at the Theatre Royal lust evening to witness the boxing contest between Billy iiurphy (ex-champion of the world) and Tom Tuohey (champion of the? Australasian hkjuadion) for the feather-weight ! championship of Saw Zealand. Previous to the match a few frieudly bouts were indulged in between James and Johnstone (local boxers). Following on these the brothers James (two Utile chaps of 8 and U years respectively, and pupils oi Tom Tuoheyj entered the ring and gave a very clever exhibition. The youngsters "got to it" with a vigor that was most refreshing. The audience showed its appreciation of the three rounds box**! by heartily applauding the boys.

The event of the evciiiug was rather disappointing, inasmuch as the bout only lasted for ±y.. minutes. .Murphy and Tuohey were received with applause as they entered the ring. The former's weight was 8.7, Tuoliey turning the s-ialcn at two pounds less. The bout was willing from the start, the men "locking" frequently, Mr Len Andrews, who oflieiated as referee inside the ring, separating them promptly 011 each occasion. In one of the locks, Murphy was thrown rather heavily, hut was not hurt, and Tuoliey also accompanied him to the sawdust. Murphy early demonstrated his superiority as a [M-ientilic bo.Ner, and pive a brief e\hiIbition of his old hard hitting capabilities. Tuoliey sji.invil well, but could no! get away from his npjMjneut. Afler about a minute and a half of indecisive exchanges, Tuoliey received a cut oil the right cheek, which caused him to stagger, but immediately came up.
