FEDERAL BALANCE SHEET. THE NEW TARIFF. Received l>th, 12.42 a.m. Melbourne, August 8. Sir W. Lyne delivered his Budget tonight. It chimed that Australia, under Federat ioii. had made a notable advance in trade. The total revenue was £12.832,2 m. Customs and Excise contributing £9,648,662, an increase over the preceding year of £050,342. The total amount returned to the States was The States received £805,000 in excess of the sum required to be paid under the ''P»r.iddon clause.'' It waa ex|»eeted the revenue from sugar in the present vear would be £47,00(1, compared with £122,000 the previous year; whiie siigir e-,i-ise was estimated to produce £74O,(KK), compared with £5411.000 last year. An anlvsis of the tariff wa= nnt fully available, but generally speaking it is slightly of a protectionist character. Increases have bene made i- the majority of lin-s. Clothing has Nvn raised to 40 and l.j per cent., woollens raised to 35 per cent., and furniture to 40 ner Cent.
