DANGERS OF ELECTRIC LIGHT IN HARBORS.
The establishment of modern factories and industrial undertakings on, or in dose proximity to, the coast, carriey with it certain dangers to shipping to wliich hitnurto little attention haa ben paid. _ The powerful lighting of such establishments is the cause of great anxiety and confusion to those responsible for navigating vessel. Serious complaints have been made to the aulliorities at Kiel, the German naval station, that the numerous and powerful electric 'lights in the Government and private yards and works have added considerably to the diflleultie-i of navigation. The lights blend and, seen from the sea, tliey neutralise the effect of lighthouses and harbor beacons. The Kiel Chamber of Commerce has recommended that steps should be taken to divert the rays from the direction of the sea, the illumination of which was, after all, not the purpose bad in view by the yards and industrial co'iecrns wliich had the light Installed. This is a. matter which may have to be dealt with sooner or later by all important harbori. '
