PROVINCIAL NEWS.

-N'UAiKE, tin Friday night a school social was held for the purpose of raising funds to provide improvements in recreation for the school children. It was a much anticipated event and well attended. The hall was tastefully decorated with evergreens, and the floor (always a good one) was in excellent condition. The music was gratuitously provided by Mrs Birdsall (piano), Mr Bart Orr (violin). Mr J. Kenny, from To Jioti, acted as MX., and dancing was kept up until the early hours of the morning, being interspersed tvilh a varied programme of songs, recitations, etc., by the following:—Mr Christie (Stratford), comic song and recitation; Miss E. Clarke (Xgaire), song; Messrs T). Cameron and Mcl.cod, banjo solo with piano accompaniment; Miss Knox. song. Master F. Barkctt (live years) executed a song with wonderful dramatic effect for one so young. Mr W. Gooding also gave a sailor's hornpipe in very effective style. The ladies provided refreshments in their usual liberal manner during the evening. Mr Stratford, the new schoolmaster, is to he congratulated on this his lirst effort at money-raising fortius school, and in a ltnppy speech both he and Mr Coleman (chairman of committee) thanked the parents and friends for their very liberal support. The proceeds of tile effort amounted to £l3.
