Tlir Society's annual show opened yesterday afternoon at the Dill Hall. As usual there are large entries, tliouj/Ji neither numerically nor in quality does the show compare equally with recent exhibitions of the Society. The numeri-

ton and t\ Goodacrc—whose exhibits have almost made a poultry show in themselves for several years past, are not showing this year; and that Mr W. Hall, another large exhibitor, was this year engaged in the capacity of judge, and therefore debarred from competing. The quality on the whole was not up to the usual standard, though, of course, there were some exceptionally fine birds shown. As usual, there were many gaps

in the catalogue. Xotable absentees were Dorkings, Cochins, Dark Brahmas, White Langshams, Polish, Spanish, Andalusians, and table poultry. There were in all 410 birds staged for competition, ineluding many well-known competitors at the various Xbrlh Tsland shows. Pigeons are an exceptionally strong section, and are a most interesting feature of the show. The various officials have all

their work well upjo date, and arrangc[nients are running smoothly. Mr J. Clark as secretary seems to have fully grasped the multitudinous seetarial details, and judges and exhibitors alike speak highly of his prompt courtesy. Mr W. Hall, of Lcpperton, judged the bulk of the poultry. Chatting to our representative, he said the quality was not

quite up to the usual standard. Walking round the pens lie mentioned that the small class of Brahmaa presented good specimens. There were seven Langshans shown, all black. The cock winning on type and had. The winning hen was a well-proportioned bird, fairly close to standard, and the pullet shown by Mr C. 11. Burnett was adjudged the best pullet in the show. Mr S. Tecd'a male-winner in the Black Orpington class was a very fine specimen, nf good type and color. The second bird was a little leggy, and not so good in color. The first prize hen was a nice big bird of good type, but a little loose in the feather, and here again the second prize-taker was on the leggy side. Cockerels were not in great favor with the judge, but the prize pul lei was one of the best birds in the section. There were small classes in buffs, and most of the exhibits were washy in colour, though otherwise fairly well shown. One or two were motley in colour. Rosecomb buffs were poor. Single entries were made in White Orpingtons. The cockerel was too much of the Langshan type, but the hen and pullet were fair. Plymouth Rocks also brought classes of one and two, and here there was some good' quality, though the Whites were narrow-bodied and leggy, of the Leghorn type. The only entry' in the Houdan section was not a good typical. Wyandottes and Leghorns were the strongest sections in the show. Golden

Wyandottes presented big classes. The cock bird, though perhaps a trifle small, was one of the best birds in the show. Cockerels were a good class, though also on the smali side. Silver Wyandottes were poor, but the White hen", winning first and special, was the best hen in the show. Three Minorca* were penned, but the k'st was only medium. In the White Leghorn section the cocks showed signs nf age, going white in the face. The hens were one of the strongest classes m the show, the winning bird bein» very well shown. Mr G. E. .T. Evans' cockerel was awarded special for best cockerel in the show, winning the Society's trophy. Ihe pu lets were likewise good. Browns had nothing very special about them, and the Buffs were mostly on the small side the winning cockerel and pullet meeting with ni.»st favor, the former taking the .North Island championship. In the American type of White Leghorns there was fair competition, with fair quality Iherewa, „„t a g„od Hamburg in the »ho e class. Ducks, on the whole, were good, the young lvkin drake winning on type and color. Tiiuian Runners were better than usual. In the trios were some hater birds than were shown in the open classes. The Show will be open again to-dav from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 10 p.m. The public may feel assured of spending an interesting hour or two in inspecting tlie specimens of the various breeds. Art Union tickets and the guessing competition help to keep the shillings moving.
