Loudon, July 23. Jabez Wolfe, after swimming and drifting twenty miles failed to cross the English Channel. He declares that he will not attempt the feat again. The principal underground railways, motor, horse, and omnibus companies, hare resolved to form a London Passenger Traffic Board to consider the question of getting remunerative fares. One hundred and ten motor omnibuses had withdrawn from the service, the proprietors alleging that a fare of a penny per mile was necessary to ensure a profit. Eight hundred and fifty motor omnibuses are still running.
The London Street Area Street Noise Abatement Committee alleges that motor omnibuses and traction engine traffic have deprecated the value of London house property by £6,000.000. At the request of Lord Elgin, Secretary for the Colonies. Mr Winston Churchill is to visit British East Africa and Uganda during the Parliamentary recess to examine into native questions. Dr. Haw, an American lawyer, has been sentenced to death at Karlsruhe for shooting his mother-in-law at Baden last November. He is alleged to have comitted the crime in order to obtain her fortune. He telephoned to her asking her to meet him, and took the opportunity to shoot her. Haw has appealed. While the prisoner was awaiting trial, his wife committed suicide by drowning heraelf in the Lake of Zurich. Brussels, July 24. King Leopold opened a new port at Zeekrugge. the terminus of the Bruges ship canal. Tokio, July 23. An explosion occurred in the Toyoka Colliery, in the Province of Bungs. It is feared that 479 men have been killed. Sydney, July 24. The Health Officer discovered seventytwo tins of opium floating near the Heads. They had evidently been dropped overlioard from an Eastern-going steamer, with a view to evading the duty. Two Chinamen were seen i'l a boat in the vicinity. Apparently they intended to pick the opium up.
Melbourne, Julv 24. The Metropolitan Board of Works has accepted the offer of the Australian Mutual Provident Society to purchase 1300,(100 worth of "delientiircs. The health of the Federal Premier. llimi. A. JVnkin. is improving, but his medical adviser recommends him to take a long sea voyage. Mr Deakin, however, has decided to rc-iime work in a fortnight.
