NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The New Plymouth Borough Council met on Monday night. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr 33. Doekrill) presiding, and Councillors' Boon, liellringer, Coleman, Pikett, Collis, ..Mills, CatUey, Browne, and Morey. Jlr U. Black, electrical engineer, wrote thanking the Council for leave of abhontv and for its resolution of sympathy. He also expressed his appreciation of the manner in wliicii the staff had carried on the work during his absence-

MOLHSWO'JU'H STREET EXTENSION". Tim Harbor Board forwarded copy cf the resolution passed at its last meeting dedicating a strip of land for tile widening of Moiesworth street. The Mayor moved that the copy of tiie resolution be forwarded to tlie General Manager of Railways asking him to Bet out the piece of ground to be sold to the ihorougii and the purchase money required. The Mayor said the covering letter should explain the necessity for hurry, as nothing could lie done definitely until the ratepayers had I voted the necessary funds. —Carried. THE TOWN CLOCK.

Mr A. L. Cooke wrote that the roof of the room in which the town do;k was placed leaked very badly. That | (Monday) morning one half of the floor i was wet. There was no J and consequently the. room was very damp, and injurious to the clock. Or. Collis moved that a copy of that letter bo sent to Mr Brockclt to-morrow morning. Cr. Pikett: "I move that it he burned." Cr. Pikett considered that lite Public Works Depatrment would put the whole place in order. Or. Bellringer said the Council had decided not to take charge of the. clock yet. Then why this letter? The Mayor explained that he knew what an uproar would have taken place had the clock been allowed to stop, so arrangements had been made to have tlie clock wound and generally looked after. After lengthy discussion, Cr. Collis' motion was carried. DRATNAGE NEEDED.

Mr Jas. W. Boon asked the Council, to proceed with the extension of tho sewer in.Gill street in order to connect liis properties. Tho well into which his sewage now discharged was so filled up that Ilia drains would not work— Referred to the Drainage Committee, with power to act. TECHNICAL EDUCATION. The Education Board thanked the Council for its vote of £SO for technical education purposes, and asked a remittance at the Council's earliest convenience.

The Mayor said the Couiicil could not deal with the matter just now until the. "earliest .convenience" had bean decided definitely. Ho had seen Mr Okcy,M.H.K in reference to the Council's private Bill dealing with finance, and he had said that the Chairman of llie Local Bills Committee had perused the Bill with him, and could see nothing in it to prevent its passing. The BiH would go before the Committee on Wednesday morning. THE LADIES' ROOM.

Miss S. Amburv, secretary of the local (branch of the W.C.T.U-, asked the Council to again grant the 'branch permission to use and control the ladies' rest room in the Town Hall as in the past. !

Cr. Collis, as chairman of the Reserves Committee, moved that the request he acceded to.—Seconded by the Mayor and carried, with the addition, suggested by Cr. Bcllringer, that the ladies be thanked for the manner in which the room had been maintained for public, use. ■ . i,l WORKS COMMITTEE.

The Works Committee's report was read, recommending that the Cai'rington lioad Board !>.■ granted the use of the road roller at a time to be fixed by the borough foreman for the sum of .£2 pir ■day; that in view of the opinion already given ,liy the Borough Solicitors, the committee, being satfslicd that the borough as a whole is suffering 110 damage, has 110 recommendation to maxc in connection with the petition against tho diversion by Messrs Collett and Co. of tho Jluatoki stream; tliat the foreman be instructed to give effect to Mr Kerr's request for repairs to gutters In Fulford street at a cost not exceeding £2, Mr Kerr undertaking to contribute fltowirds the cost; that the question of dialing with the pipes at the corner of Vivian and Brougham streets be 10ferred to the borough foreman to report upon; that it be a recommendation from the committee that all new works and taking of levels be placed under the control of the sanitary engine"]'; that (he Railway Department be asked to construct an overhead bridge a-t Wii--111 mu street. The committee recommends that the Taranaki County Council be inform d that it is the intention of the Council to hold them liable, for all damage to borough streets and to the Clemow road vising from the cartage of metal 011 their (behalf; that the Fitzroy Town Board bo asked to renew the arrangement re upkeep of Clcmow road; that the foreman report on the cost of concrete channelling the west side of Queen street between Devon and King streets. Messrs Lewis and Salt entered a protest against the reception of their request for a little piece of work in Shortland street, Vogeltown. The Roadj Board had done some work on the footpath, and this was rendered useless unless the Borough Council would do its i share. ' 1 ■ (

The Western Park Committee recommended the acceptance of the offer of .Messrs Bullot and Griffiths to erect ja seven-feet iron fence nine chains along the Morley street frontage of Western Park, on condition that they are allowed the right to use both aides of tlie| ff«n«e for. advertising purposes for ten years. The cost of the fence would be about '£9o. WCR Consideration of the matter was deferred.

" RUBBISH DESTRUCTOR. The engineer reported: I beg to state that I have made several enquiries re this and beg to submit to you this evening plans and prices which I have obtained. The one in his opinion which would be most suitable" was a higher priced destructor for which a tender is •submitted bv Messrs lTorsfall Bros., who had agents in this dominion. My estimate of £2500 may be rather high. I should have liked to have a quotation I from Messrs Mcldrum Bros, but this nas I not yet come, to hand.
