| Zanzibar, July 16. A higher Court at Mombaesa has reversed the sentence on Captain Grogan and Grey for flogging native* at Nairoba. East Africa. The Court did not order a new trial, as imprisonment had already been undergone. (It will be remembered that these cases created a great deal of agitation in the earlier part of the year. Owing to a lack of police, protection natives in Nalribi, British East Africa, insulted several white women. Captain Grogan, president of the Colonial Association, together with other Europeans, publicly flogged three negroes outside the court- ! house, despite' the magistrate's protest. Captain Grogan and Grey were subsequently convicted, and sentenced to short sentences for the flogging.) Loudon, July 10. In the House of Commons, in reply to Mr Henniker Heaton's question, the Hon* R. B. Haldane Baid it was impossible to alter the date for receiving tenders for preserved ments for the Anny in the present case, but in future every endeavour would be made to, meet the convenience of the Australian market. At an Inquest concerning the death of an Imperial i ensioner who committed suicide, his wife stated that he had attempted suicide at least a dozen times—generally about the time of full moOn.
Four or five times she had cut the rope with which l>e attempted to hang himself, and bo saved his life.
Sydney, July 20. The Court has decided that a lady help is a domestic servant within the meaning of the Aet.
