OVIXAKE. ( From Urn- Own Correspondent.) Jir A. Langlon, manager of the OaoUiii dairy factory, met with a painful accident on Wednesday evening. lie was cycling liouie from Opitnake, when the front fork of his machine broke, and lie was thrown to the ground. -sustaining vrions injuries to his face. Mr R. X. Westolv, who has been at the local bank for some time, leaves this week for Taihape, whither he has been transferred. His place is (o lie taken by Mr lliggins. Mr T. Wiielan, of the local post office staff, has been transferred to Whangarei. Mr Barnard, of Whangarei, replaces him.

There is a good deal yf sickness prevalent among the school children lure, especially measles and whooping cough. It is probable the school will be closed lor a while.

A cricketers' social was held in the kical iiall on Wednesday night, and wis well attend'il, aliout oO couples being' present. The floor was in good order, and excellent music was discoursed by an orchestra of five. viz.. Messrs Kno.rles (piano). Duncan (violinl. Fischer (cornet), Hodgson tlintel, and Markliniii ("cello!. r Dudley made an ctlicient M.C. A splendid supper was provided, and dancing wa-, kept going with unabated vigor until the early hours. A farewell smoke concert was tendered on Monday night to Mr C. Brooking. who is shortly leaving the district. There were over Jtl present. Mr M. Hall occupied the chair, and Mr Ifarurood the vice-chair. The Chairman, in a happy speech, presented Mr Brooking with a set of pipes and a purse of sovereigns on behalf of his many friends., Mr Brooking, who was taken by surprise. suitably replied. At a meeting of the Town Board on Monday evening the tender of Mr Hickv was accepted for a horse and dray. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Monday next to reconsider the question of contributing to the cost of obtaining expert advice re the proposed Opiinake-Eltham tramway.
