WELLINGTON RACES. FIRST DAY. Per Press Association. Wellington, July 20. The Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting opened to-day in fine weather. The attendance was large, including his Excellency the Governor, Sir Joseph Ward, Hons. Carroll, Millar, and Findlav, and members of Parliament. The sum of £15.308 was passed through the totaiisator, being £3850 more than the corresponding day last year. The winning doub'.e on the Parliamentary Handicap and Winter Hurdles paid £ll3 lis. Stewards' Handicap, six furlongs: St. I Bill 1, Gawain 2, Jolly Friar 3. Also started: St. Ciaimer, Platypus, Chicane, Makikihi, Kaiuku, Pardon, Silver Shell. Won by a length. Time, 1.19. Dividends, £■> 12s and £1 7s.

Miraniar Hack Handicap, seven furlongs: Wakaraka 1, Truthful 2, Toilgaroa 3. Also started: Te Arai, Com-pa-s. Warlock, Pearlie Vale. Nero, Hinupai. Gold Guard. Scenery, Lady Storm, Papatawa. Intelligence and Kuraawaka were prominent for half way, where Ellerton took charge, and won comfortably by half a length, Kurawaka three lengths away. Time, 1.47 3-5. Dividends, £5 16s and £4 17s.

Winter Hurdles, two miles: Lull 1, Asteroid 2, Cavalry 3. Also started: Prospector, Pushful, Evenlode, Merriwai, Bonheur, Ben Jonson, Levant. Ben Jonson, and Lull lad for a mile and a half, where the former dropped back beaten. Asteroid challenged Lull, but the latter held the advantage, and won by two lengths. Time, 3.52 4-5. Dividends, £7 6s and £2 ss.
