■»- . PROPOSED ALTERATIONS. Per Press Association. Wellington, July 10. The following are tho principal alterations in the tariff: — Almonds, free. Boiled sugars and confectionary, 3d per lb instead of 2d. i Dried fruits, currants, dates, figs, prunes, raisin?, maizena and cornflour, mustard spices (unground), sugar, molasses and treacle, tartaric acid, cream of tirtar, soda (carbonate and l>i-car-bonate), cotton piece goods of all kinds, linen piece goods and unions of same, window glass (crown and plate), paperhangings, lead in sheets, vegetable oils 'ln 3>ulk, sporting powder, are all free- | aftev OctoW 31»l.
The following are reduced from 25 to per cent.: Lace, ribbons, silks. British-grown tea must be in packages over 511 m to be freeChemicals, 'drugs, patent medicines, and sarsnpavilla are raised 5 por cent. Surgical and dentists' instruments, formerly free, will now pay 20 per cent. Hosiery is raised from 20 to 25 per cent. Mouldings of all kinds are raised from 15 to 20 per o?nt. Billiard furniture is reduced from 25 to 20 per cent. Hjandbills, programmes, and printed advertising matter are raised from 20 per cent, ad valorem to 3d per lb. Half-tone and line blocks, formerly free, will now pay 25 per cent. Shot cartridges are rnised from 1b to 2s per 1000. Oash registers are raised from 10 to 20 per ceut. Hydraulic cranes, formerly free, pay 20 per cent.
Electric machinery and appliances, gas meters, and gas-making apparatus are raised from 10 to 20 per cent. Iron pipes over five inches in diame.ter are raised from 5-to 20 par cent. Motor cars, formerly paying 20 per cent-, now come in free. Potatoes will pay £1 per ton "instead of 20 per oent. Blue is reduced from 2d to Id per lb. Dandles are wised from ly 2 d instead of Id per lb. Cork (cut) is reduced from 20 per cant, to free.
Paraffin wax is raised from %& to Id. Food preservatives, maltine, chlorodyrie, and water-hardening chemicals
are taken from the free list and included as drugs.
Magic lanterns, cinematographs, asd like instruments are raised from free to 20 par cent. Locomotive!', formerly free, are included as steam engines at 20 per cent. Crude gas oils, formerly free, will ply a halfpenny per gallon. Artificers' brushes go from free to 25
per cent. The preferential schedules are largely extended, most of the items now subject to duty on the free list, except raw materials which cannot be produced in BriEifili possessions, being included in them, The amounts practically remain as before, from 10 fo 20 per cent.
VIEWS OP BUSINESS MEN. Per Press Association. Wellington, July 17. Representatives of the woollen and iron industries express themselves disappointed with the tariff, and think something should have been done to help these -trades., both of which have a struggle under the present conditions. The coachbuilders object to motor oars coming in free, and think the duty should have been raised. Objections are also offered to the increase on paraffin. Other representative men, interviewed, express satisfaction with the alterations as a whole, especially the remissions on sugar, fruits, etc'
