WEST END SCHOOL.

The cularged West End School is about as compact anil cheerful a building as one could wish for. The growth of the population in the district is proved by the fact that in January, 1905, tho school had to be enlarged by the addition of two new class-rooms, each 29 ft by 28ft., comprising the east wing of the building. Latterly the crowded state of the emarged building was brought under the notice of the Secretary for Education, the board's representatives on the matter having been fruitless. The alterations were then authorised, and the contract for enlargement let to Messrs Boon Bros., who have now completed the building. The work necessitated an extended vacation, but the school eventually re-upeucd yesterday. The small room iu the middle of the building has been enlarged, almost doubled iu size, so that the classes can be taught without the teacher being compelled to face the afternoon sun. The back-room, commonly known as "The black hole of Calcutta," has been absorbed into new and enlarged porches, and the lavatories altered and enlarged. A new room, 29 It by 24 ft, has been added on the south end of tho west wing, lighted from two sides. Amongst the much appreciated improvements are teachers' rooms, one for the head teacher and another for the remaining members of the staff. These are a necessity in such a school, for interviews with parents, and so forth. Fach of the rooms has a fireplace, and is well lighted and ventilated. They are at present unfurnished. The greater portion „f ih e interior of the building has been re-painted, in light colors, and (he school is now bright and cheerful within. Mr James Sanderson, the Board's architect, has reason to be proud of the improvement.

The West End School re-opened yesterday with a record attendance 0f'327 out of a total roll number of 345. Mr Ainoore, blacksmith at Urenui. has sold his business to Mr E. Butler, for many years a member of Messrs ITminnr and Clark's coachlmiHing staff. Mr. A. L. Cool-e has undertaken the winding, oiling, and repairing of (he town clock for one year, at a cost of •Cin to the Borough Council.
